Yasmine was a bit puzzled. Why did Eric suddenly mention parallel universes? Most people think that memory confusion is due to interference from parallel worlds, but that notion does seem quite sci–fi. From a psychological point of view, memory confusion stems from self–doubt. But there are exceptions, like significant trauma or hypnosis.
Yasmine thought for a long time. She hadn’t experienced any major trauma, but she couldn’t be sure about the hypnosis
part.
Eric’s voice rang out again, “A parallel world in reality is hard to imagine, but you can think of it as a parallel world in your mind, where every branch of time is a parallel world. When stimulated, the branches you’ve experienced might intertwine -this is what causes memory confusion.” He paused before continuing, “Of course, it’s also possible that you haven’t been stimulated, but there’s still a chance of forgetting subconsciously.”
Yasmine understood what Eric meant. Forgetting subconsciously is scarier than losing memory due to a stimulus–it’s what people call self–deception. However, this most sensible explanation didn’t make sense for her; she had no reason to forget Yoselin three years ago, and even less to forget Yonas.
“Mr. Smith, Yoselin’s condition has stabilized, it seems like there’s nothing wrong, but I still feel uneasy,” Yasmine thought. It was like the calm before the storm. Every psychological disorder seems to be in a hibernation state when stable, but once it erupts, it becomes unimaginable.
Eric understood her concerns, “All we can do is provide alleviating treatments; psychological issues are the hardest to eradicate.”
“Okay, thank you, Mr. Russell,” Yasmine said.
Eric told her not to worry, “If you need a hypnotherapist, feel free to contact me,” he said calmly.
After hanging up the phone and waiting a few minutes, Yoselin handed over the completed test papers, “Yasmine, I’m done.” This set of tests wasn’t difficult; it was just to monitor her emotional changes.
Yasmine nodded, still lost in the conversation she just had with Eric.
Yoselin glanced at the time and jumped up. “Yasmine, I have to go, or Grandpa will start checking on me.” Most importantly, Irene had said she should come back early.
After Yoselin left, Yasmine kept researching the memory disorder issue. Somehow, the collective amnesia only happened to her and Yoselin, and there was still a possibility that those things weren’t real.
As Eric said, Yonas‘ experiences were all based on certain perceptions. The scenes he described might not have truly happened but could have been imagined from the depths of his memory.
Back at the White family residence, Irene smashed everything in her room to pieces. Whenever she thought about Crescent Isle, it gave her a headache. It was a disgrace for her. She had never been played like this, especially during the meeting today when those directors kept making sly remarks, as if saying how incompetent she was

Yvette sat down in fear and drank the soup her mother made. She sighed helplessly, “Even if I had evidence, what good would it do? She’s Irene, and there’s no way Mr. White would let her go to jail. In the end, I’d just be the scapegoat again.”
Melissa sighed, knowing Yvette was right. “It’s my fault for not giving you the same background as Irene. Now, being pregnant, you have to live in fear of being sent to prison.*
