Chapter 113: All I Can Do Is Water You
Eric’s gaze moved from Frank.“You’re welcome.” He looked at Evelyn, his eyes distant and calm.“Thank you for saving Alex.”
Evelyn disagreed.“Alex saved me.”
Alex grabbed her hand, patted his chest, then pointed at his smartwatch. She understood; he was saying he would always protect her.
Evelyn praised him softly, “Alex was very brave today!”
Alex! Can I kiss you?” Lily hugged Alex, who didn’t resist. She kissed his cheek. Evelyn knelt down and kissed his head. His cheeks were rosy, his eyes sparkling.
Earlier, she’d told Lily what happened during the mushroom picking. Lily wanted to confront Tommy, but knowing he was spending the night on the slope, she decided to wait until he returned to school to talk to him.
Frank noticed Eric looking at Evelyn and Alex; beneath his cold glasses, a hint of warmth -appeared in his eyes.
“Mr. Reed, have you considered finding a mother for your son?” Frank asked.
A servant, setting the table, chimed in, “Young Master is close to Ms. Hayes. If Ms. Hayes could be Young Master’s mother…”

The servants, aware of Evelyn’s past relationship with Eric, saw her access to his study and Alex’s comfort with her. They felt she was special to them.
However, Alex reacted strongly. He struggled in Lily’s arms, then retreated, his eyes reddening. He ran to his room.
“Alex!” Evelyn called, but he ran faster. The servant apologized for her remark. Eric coldly ordered, “Leave!” Seeing Evelyn and Lily looking at the closed door, he said, “Leave him Be. Let’s eat.”
Evelyn turned, punching Frank’s arm. He scratched his head, a sheepish expression on his usually stern face.
“Did I say something wrong?” He felt the need to provoke the Reed family. Evelyn whispered, “Alex is a sensitive child. When you see him…” she mimed zipping her lips shut. Frank nodded.
In the dining room, Evelyn prepared a small plate of food.“I’ll take this to Alex.”
Lily looked worried. Would Alex stop interacting with them?
“Alex, it’s me. I brought you some food. If you want to be alone, take this to your room.” Evelyn knocked, but there was no response.
She noticed a piece of paper being slid under the door. It read:“I don’t want you to be my mother.”
Another paper followed – a drawing of a blonde queen in a pink dress and crown, with a king in a uniform and crown, a girl, and a boy. Only the queen looked sad.
Another drawing showed the queen and daughter leaving the castle, the queen smiling brightly.

A third drawing showed the queen and daughter meeting another king with a boy. The king held a ring, proposing to the queen.
A fourth drawing showed the queen with the girl and new king, her expression uncertain.
Alex was talented; his simple drawings vividly captured emotions.
Evelyn sat by the door, holding the drawings and the note. Her eyes welled up.
He didn’t want her to be his mother, didn’t want her to become a mother again, to bear the burden of motherhood. But the drawings showed he liked her. He liked her so much that he didn’t want to hurt her. By isolating himself, he might prevent her from repeating past mistakes. Evelyn turned to see Eric approaching in his wheelchair.“Why are you sitting on the floor?”
She showed him the drawings.
“Alex is a clever and heartbreaking child,” Eric said after seeing them.“Liking someone doesn’t mean possessing them.”
He confessed, “I had the wrong idea. You were my best student, but you’re also a girl. I thought a husband would protect you. Reality proved me wrong. People change. Don’t put yourself in a vulnerable position, relying on anyone.”
Caleb’s bitter roar echoed in her mind:“You were selfish! You wanted Evelyn to be useful to Reed Corporation, so you made me marry her! The strongest partnership is marriage! She was your, pawn! How could I fall for a woman with ulterior motives?”
Eric looked down, extending a hand, but he didn’t touch her. His compassionate gaze was directed at his own emotions.
“I shouldn’t have kept you on my planet. You need to grow wild, face storms, and all I can do is water you. Evelyn, I want to see you grow sharp thorns, stand out among millions!”
He returned the drawings.“You don’t need to be anyone’s mother, wife, or daughter–in–law. Be yourself, live for yourself.”
Silence fell. Frank concerned, had followed. He stopped upon hearing Eric’s words.
Evelyn’s eyes shone brightly.“I know, Teacher, you also like me.” It was a liking without possession, pure admiration and love.
Eric’s Adam’s apple bobbed; her fervor was a powerful force that could capture him in the vast
universe.
The door opened; Alex peeked out.
