Chapter 2
Although I had already realized what kind of person Noal was, after so many years of emotions, I still instinctively tugged at Noah’s sleeve, wanting to seek his help.
Noah, however, took a step back, leaving my hand hanging helplessly.
He was all cold eyes, not the gentle guy he usually was.
“Lina, please be sensible and hand over the money first. My dad is really sick, and I will repay you the money in the future.”
“I know you wanted to use the dowry money to prove your position in my heart, but 288,800 dollars is really too much. How about deducting 88,000 dollars from it as your dowry?”
He said this as if it was me who had forced him to give me so much dowry back then.
Sure enough, many guests were led astray by him and they all blamed me.
“Lina, 88,000 is already a lot for the dowry. In our village, the standard for marrying off daughters is usually around this amount. You really don’t need to ask the Andrade family for so much money.”
“Yeah, who asks for 288,800 dollars just like that? Are they trying to empty someone’s savings?”
“Oh, you guys don’t know yet, there’s a type of person now called ‘gold–digging women‘, who deceive dowry money under the pretense of getting married and then run away.”
“That’s enough! What nonsense are you talking about!”
My mother got angry and stood up, pushing my mother–in–law away and standing in front of me.
“In the beginning, my family Lina only asked for a dowry of 10,000 dollars. Wasn’t it your family that raised the dowry to 288,800 dollars? Even if it was an exorbitant dowry, it was your family’s own proposal. Besides, go and ask around the whole street, is there any family that would take back. the dowry on the wedding day!”
As soon as these words were spoken, the surrounding voices immediately quieted down. After all, the way the mother–in–law handled this matter was indeed inappropriate.
Seeing that public opinion was turning against them, Noah suddenly dropped to his knees in front of my mother.
“Mother–in–law, I know that our family has wronged Lina in this matter, but my father is currently lying in a hospital bed. I am willing to do anything you ask; I just beg you to let Lina return the money to me first.”
My mother was so angry that she covered her chest and kept gasping for breath.
I quickly patted her back to help her catch her breath.
“Noah, please stop talking.”
Noah, however, as if inspired by my mother’s painful expression, said to himself, “Lina, when you’re in love, you have your own thoughts, and I can tolerate that. But marriage is a matter involving two families, and you can’t disregard my father’s well–being.”
“I know you grew up in a single–parent family and never experienced a father’s love, but I promise that as long as you are willing to take out the money to save my dad, my dad will definitely treat you like his own daughter in the future.”
“Lina, please, I beg you!”
Noah kept talking more and more enthusiastically. He was convinced that I couldn’t bear to see my mother suffer and wanted to force me to give him money through this method.
However, just as he took a step forward and was about to say something else, a piercing siren suddenly sounded from outside the door.
Noah’s face changed.
“You, how did you call the police?”
I supported my mother and coldly looked at him.
“Shouldn’t we have reported the loss of such a large sum of money? Or, Noah, are you afraid of something?”
