Chapter 505
Greta settled into the car without saying a word to the driver, confident that the Rowland family’s bodyguards had everything under control for her. She closed her eyes, hoping to catch a moment of peace.
Suddenly, a piercing pain jolted through her ankle, snapping Greta back to reality. To her shock, she found herself sprawled on the muddy ground near Rainbow Bridge, surrounded by a gang of thugs with sinister grins. Panic surged through her as she tried to escape, but both her ankles were dislocated. She was utterly helpless. One thug sneered, “Lady, you’ve messed with the wrong people. Someone wants you gone.”
Greta glared at them defiantly, “I know who’s behind this. It’s Nathalie, isn’t it? I’m warning you, touch me and the cops will track you down. She’s not worth you ending up in prison for.”
“Nathalie? Never heard of her,” the thug said, scratching his head. He then nodded towards a sleek black car parked a short distance away. “The one who wants you dead is right over there.”
Following his gaze, Greta’s heart plummeted when she recognized the car’s license plate. It was Cameron’s. “Cameron, is that you?” she cried out. “Cameron, help me!”
The car window rolled down, revealing a hand that signaled the thugs to “continue.” Greta’s eyes were drawn to the diamond ring on the hand, identical to her own. She felt the world drain away, leaving her hollow and defeated.
“How could you do this to me, Cameron?” she murmured, her voice breaking. “I loved you so much. Everything I did was because of that love.”
Blows rained down on her abdomen, each one more painful than the last. Greta curled up in agony, her body and heart aching in equal measure.
In that moment of despair, an unfamiliar memory invaded her mind. She saw Nellie, suffering from kidney failure, pleading for help. Swollen and unable to urinate, Nellie knelt, begging Greta to let the doctors save her. “I’m in so much pain. Please help me, let them save me.”
But Greta, arms crossed, looked down at her with icy detachment. “Nellie, it’s not that I don’t want to help you It’s just that you being alive interferes with my plans.”
Nellie shook her head, tears in her eyes. “I haven’t done anything. Cameron loves you, and Mrs. Dawson isn’t fond of me. I couldn’t take what’s yours.”
Greta snapped, “You’re lying! Cameron’s heart has clearly turned towards you. He’s fallen for you completely, so much so that he wants to leave me and send me away. He calls you the strongest, kindest girl he’s ever met. He regrets not realizing his feelings sooner. Nellie, you’ve won. You’ve taken my man. Without Cameron, I have nothing. So, you must die.”
Nellie’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Cameron loves me? How could that be?”
“You must be thrilled, right? He finally fell for you? Do you know why he’s been traveling so much lately? He’s been searching for a specialist for you. He even thought I’d give you my kidney…”
“How could this be? If he loves me so much, why haven’t I felt any of it?” Nellie stammered, bewildered. “Because of my interference… or maybe his own,” Greta whispered, the truth unraveling painfully around her.
