News of Julian being alive and getting engaged spread quickly through our social circles.
Everyone started reaching out to me.
Some offered sympathy, others cursed Julian as a cheater, and a few just seemed amused by the drama.
My college roommate Sophie called, furiously ranting about Julian.
“When I first heard Julian was alive, I was so happy for you! Then next thing I know, he’s getting engaged to someone else! How could he? Memory loss is no excuse for betrayal! You’re his fiancée – hasn’t anyone reminded
him of that?
“This is unacceptable. I won’t let my best friend be treated like this! Let me find out where this engagement party is happening. We’re going to give him a piece of our mind!”
I laughed softly: “Even marriages end in divorce – engagements can be broken too. Whatever happened between us ended two years ago. His life now has nothing to do with me.”
Sophie was still fuming: “I just can’t get over this… You waited for him for two years! I watched you stay single all
this time!”
I nearly choked on my cookie.

Sophie tried a few more times to convince me to confront Julian with her.
When I refused again, she sighed.
“Fine, fine. But will you at least come out tonight? We haven’t hung out in ages. Let me treat you to some drinks!”
With nothing else planned, I agreed.
Sophie had chosen the venue and arrived first. When I saw the hotel in front of me, I felt confused.
“I thought we were going to a bar? Why are we at a hotel?”
Sophie avoided my eyes, tugging at my arm to lead me inside.
“Bars aren’t safe this late at night. What if we get drunk and something happens? A hotel restaurant is much better – we can have some food with our drinks, much more comfortable!”
