Chapter 8
In the back seat of the car. Ash’s face was dark as he removed my heel, placing my foot on his lap..
“Weren’t you supposed to be on a business trip? Why are you back?”
“Wrapped up early. Saw in the group chat that you were at Julian’s engagement party.”
I knew about the group chat their social circle maintained. During Julian’s two “dead” years, he’d frequently shared his adventures there.
I glanced at Ash’s clothes – still the same suit from our morning video call. Knowing his habits, he always changed after landing. He must have come straight here from the airport.
“Sophie tricked me into coming. Claire is her cousin,” I explained everything to Ash. This man might look quiet, but his mind was always working overtime.
“I’m not going back to Julian. That ended two years ago – I’m not about to crash his engagement.”
Ash remained silent, but his expression softened considerably.
He took me to the hospital where X–rays showed the injury wasn’t severe but not minor either. I’d need bed rest for a month.
While the doctor was putting on my cast, Ash disappeared somewhere.
Outside the hospital room. Ash stood in the hallway, listening to his assistant’s call.
“Mr. Harrington, we’ve terminated the partnership agreements with the Winters Group. A few contracts are still being unwound, but we’re expediting the process. Julian Winters has been calling – says he couldn’t reach you directly.”
Ash’s voice was cold: “Ignore him.”
“Yes, sir.”
