Chapter 23 Confrontation
Celeste retorted, “What does it matter to you where I am?”
She kept her gaze firmly fixed on the floor, never daring to glance at Nathaniel.
Nathaniel’s eyes, however, were fixed intently on her lightly made–up face–every feature from her eyebrows to her lips, which were strikingly beautiful.
Celeste was dressed in a sleek black gown, every detail of her outfit exuding her refined taste.
In his mind, with Carter in her corner, she had access to places like this effortlessly, and her style had only become more fashionable and radiant.
Nathaniel, meanwhile, was uncharacteristically grim, his usual playful demeanor replaced by an ominous scowl.
Madelynn, feeling the chill radiating from Nathaniel, knew he had a distaste for Celeste. She decided it was pointless to maintain a facade of innocence,
With a graceful tilt of her chin, she addressed Celeste, her voice dripping with disdain, “Celeste, I had almost forgotten

that with Carter by your side, you can go anywhere. I wonder if Mr. Jameson will be joining us tonight?”
Madelynn thought, “Nathaniel is here to discuss business with
Imperial Estate. If I can sway Carter to our side, it will be a
major coup.”
Madelynn was certain that her beauty alone could make
Carter reconsider.
Celeste raised an eyebrow, asking, “You want to see Carter?”
Madelynn glanced at Nathaniel, who wore an unreadable
expression.
She said, “Ms. Hartley, with Nathaniel’s business interests expanding, and given your history with him, how about your help us make an introduction to Mr. Jameson?”
Celeste’s inner sarcasm flared.
Celeste thought, “How shameless could she be? Does she not feel any embarrassment?”
Her expression was a mask of scorn as she replied, “Madelynn, everyone’s talking about how Nathaniel is madly in love with you. It seems you don’t really know him at all. He’s gotten to where he is on his own. To suggest that he should rely on resources from an ex–wife–aren’t you effectively

asking him to lose his edge?
“With your skills, if a proud man like Nathaniel is already under your spell, surely someone like Carter isn’t much of a challenge, right?”
Madelynn was momentarily speechless.
Nathaniel’s voice was cold and cutting. “I don’t need that.”

Celeste retorted with equal disdain, “And I’m not about to go out of my way to be anyone’s punching bag.”
Nathaniel’s fury was palpable, his face now contorted with a chilling rage. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from Celeste’s icy face.
Her elegance and beauty were stark contrasts to the icy calm and razor–sharp intelligence in her eyes.
He thought, “How ridiculous! She has Carter now, so why does she still look so cold and gloomy?”
“Celeste, even after a divorce, can’t you still be friends?” Madelynn’s words were meant to undermine Celeste, to show Nathaniel just how insignificant she was.
She thought, “What right does a child who was switched at birth, or a woman who was raised in the countryside, have to

compare herself to me?”
“Friends?” Celeste’s laugh was bitter and cold.
She thought, “I’ve never believed that exes can be friends. Once you’ve hurt each other, how can there be any real friendship? Love only turns into enmity.”

She shot Nathaniel a disdainful glance. “A decent ex should be like a ghost–dead and gone. Seeing you and your kind only feels like a self–inflicted punishment.
“I don’t need this kind of ‘friendship. Why would I subject myself to someone like you?”
“Celeste, you’re seeking death!” Nathaniel’s face, once a
picture of arrogant charm, was now a mask of deadly intent.
He thought, “Does she really have to be so brutally harsh?
I had no idea she could be this sharp–tongued.”
Celeste, with a casual flick of her eyes towards him, said, “Seeking death? Nathaniel, is that what you really want? What have I done to deserve this? Not only do you want to drive me away, but now you’re wishing for my end?”
She took a deep breath, her eyes devoid of any warmth. “I’m
sorry, but my life is too valuable for you to take.”

With that, Celeste turned and walked away.
