Twenty minutes later, Chase and Sam returned. The matriarch, ignoring Chase, beckoned Sam, smiling, “Sam, you’re back!”
“Great–Grandma.” Sam ran to her, receiving a head rub before going to Ashley, “Mommy.” As Ashley hugged Sam, she smelled a faint trace of Tanya’s perfume on his clothes. She didn’t mention it, gently pushing him away. Chase sat beside the matriarch, handing her a box,“An apology gift.” It was a rare snow tea she loved. She knew it was for his absence at the hot spring resort. She snorted, “You remember to get me a gift, but what about Ashley? Did you apologize to her?”
Chase smiled, saying nothing, glancing at Ashley. It was a simple glance, devoid of emotion. The matriarch intended to stand up for Ashley and make Chase care more for her. But Ashley didn’t need it. She smiled faintly, “Grandma, the food’s getting cold. Let’s eat. The matriarch thought she was avoiding the topic. Before, when the matriarch scolded Chase for ignoring Ashley, Ashley always defended him. The matriarch sighed, “You always take his side.”
silent. Chase remained Ashley remained
cold, unaffected by her defense.
It was time for dinner. The matriarch pulled Sam’s hand,“Sam hasn’t eaten with Great–Grandma in ages. Sit with me, okay?”
Sam nodded obediently.“Good girl,” the matriarch said, glancing at Chase meaningfully. Ashley knew the matriarch was trying to get them together. She ignored Chase and went to the dining room. She sat opposite the matriarch and Sam, noticing Chase pulling out the chair beside her.
