Arriving at her family’s house, Ashley parked. The matriarch and her aunt, Mandy, greeted them. Seeing the gifts, the matriarch frowned, “Why so many gifts?”
“Grandma asked me to bring them.”
The matriarch and her mother–in–law hadn’t been close since Ashley and Chase’s marriage. The matriarch snorted, saying nothing. Ashley noticed their neighbor’s villa was under renovation. She asked, “Is someone moving in?”
Yes, they started last week. They’re in a hurry. It’s almost finished; someone will move in soon.” Mandy helped carry the gifts, “Hopefully, they’re good neighbors.”
Inside, Mandy gave Ashley bird’s nest soup, “Mom said you’ve been looking tired. Take some home.”
Ashley accepted, “Thank you, Aunt.”
Ashley’s uncle, Steve, arrived late for dinner. Remembering Tim’s loss of a project because of her, she felt guilty, “Uncle, I’m sorry about last time.”
“It’s okay, it’s over,” Steve said, “Even without this, Rongshi couldn’t handle that project. They didn’t want the matriarch to know Chase had helped Tanya to target them. Seeing the matriarch arrive, Steve gestured to Ashley to stop talking. Ashley changed the subject.
