Zark looked at Chase, pausing before accepting the drink, “Thank you.” They clinked glasses and chatted. Chase looked at him intently.
Zark raised his eyebrow, “What?”
Ethan said, “You seem… off today.”
Chase smiled slightly, agreeing. Zark calmly said, “Really?”
Ethan raised an eyebrow, “Really?” Zark took a sip of wine, saying nothing. Someone approache
greet them.
After they left, Zark checked the time, worried Burke was hungry. Before he could go to Burke, she and Sam returned.
Burke asked, “Uncle, can I have that cupcake?”
Burke was allergic to many things. Zark said, “Stay here; I’ll get it.”
“Okay.” Sam, however, got her own food and asked Chase, “Dad, want
some?”
Chase ruffled her hair, “No.”
The children sat and ate; Tanya shared her food with Sam. Sam happily said, “Thank you, Tanya.”
Aunt
Burke looked at Tanya, asking Sam, “Sam, isn’t this aunt your mom?”
The hall fell silent. Sam paused, shaking her head, “No.”
Burke cautiously asked, “Don’t you have a mom?”
Sam shook her head, “Yes, I do.”
“Oh…” They were given souvenirs; Burke liked the crystal keychains and picked two. There were only two. Sam liked them too; seeing Burke take both, she asked, “Burke, can I have one? For Aunt Tanya.”
Burke hesitated, “I… want to give one to my aunt too…” Remembering Ashley, she shared, “Uncle and Auntie took me to fly a kite, fish, ride bikes, and chase butterflies… Auntie is pretty; she’ll like this enchain…“‘
