He put down his cup, saw Ashley, glanced at her, then calmly turned back to Grandma.“Didn’t
tell me I had to be home to take you out this morning?”
“Hmph, I thought you’d ignored me again!”
“Grandson wouldn’t dare.” But his expression remained impassive.
Grandma was about to explode. She ignored him and beckoned Ashley over.
Ashley sat down.“Grandma, are you going out?”
“Not ‘you,“we” are!” Grandma chuckled. “We’re going together. Ashley, where do you want to go? Grandma will follow your lead.”
Ashley sometimes felt she was boring; she couldn’t think of a place they’d all enjoy. “I’m fine with anything. Your choice.”
Grandma already had a plan.“How about a hot spring? We were supposed to go last time, and someone got me sick. This time, I’m making someone make it up to me!” The “someone” was clearly Chase.
He remained calm, sipping his tea, showing no discomfort or embarrassment at her mention of the incident. It seemed insignificant to him; he’d never really cared.
Ashley looked away. She’d already been to hot springs recently and didn’t feel like going again. But since Grandma insisted, she complied. “Okay.”
