Tanya smiled gently.“Go ahead.”
Sam hesitated before going upstairs.
Ashley was already eating when Sam rang the doorbell. Seeing her daughter on the monitor, Ashley put down her utensils and opened the door.“Sam?”
Sam bit her lip.“Mom, Dad said to ask you to come down for dinner.”
Ashley refused.“I’m already eating. You guys eat.”
Sam breathed a sigh of relief.“Okay, should I tell Dad that?”
Ashley saw her desire to join them. “Yes.”
Sam smiled, turning to leave. Then, feeling guilty, she hesitated.“Mom, are you okay being alone? Maybe I should stay with you?” It would be lonely for her mother with so many people downstairs. Her words sounded forced; she clearly preferred to be downstairs with Chase and Tanya.
