Sam ran upstairs, throwing herself into Ashley’s arms. “Mom, we’re back!” She smelled strongly of Tanya’s perfume.
Ashley calmly said “Mm,” turned off the hairdryer, and touched her face.“Did you shower?” Sam shook her head.“Not yet.”
“It’s past 10. Go shower; you have school tomorrow.”
As Ashley finished, Chase entered the bedroom. Their eyes met. Ashley looked away coldly. Sam Pulled her up.“Mom, help me shower.”
Ashley said, “Okay, let Mom dry your hair first.”
“Okay!” She happily went to get her pajamas.
Chase sat down on the other side.“When did you get back?”
“Not long ago,” she said, drying her hair, avoiding his gaze.
