They encountered Chase and Tanya as they reached the lobby.
Chase approached. “I heard the system issues are resolved. Thank you, Mr. Reed.” Tim replied coolly, “My pleasure, Mr. Sterling.”
Chase continued, “I’m very satisfied with your work. I hope we can collaborate again.”
“Thank you for your kind words,” Tim replied, though he and Ashley had already blacklisted XunDu.
As they reached the parking lot, someone rushed towards Chase with a knife. Ashley and Tim, focused on leaving, didn’t notice initially. Ashley gasped, “Xiao-”
Tanya, closer, pushed Chase out of the way. The knife pierced her chest. The attacker was subdued. Chase, his face ashen, picked up Tanya and sped off.
Tim pulled Ashley.“Let’s go.”
“Okay…”
Chase didn’t return to the old house that night or the next two days. Sam snuck out after Tanya’s injury. Only one dose of medicine remained.
On Friday, Ashley returned, intending to leave after finishing her medicine. Chase was there. Remembering the divorce, she went upstairs. He was in the living room with Ethan. He said, “You’re back.”
“Mm–hmm.”
She didn’t care about Tanya. She said, “The other day, I said-”
He interrupted.“Look at this. If you have no objections, sign here.”
