Sam was occupied elsewhere, so Ashley smiled faintly.“We’re almost divorced.” Kelly’s mother, seeing Ashley with a daughter but living alone across the street from Sam, had already suspected something. Especially after the previous parent–teacher meeting, where another stunning woman had represented Ashley.
Chase greeted Kelly’s mother, “Hello.”
“Hello… she replied.
hase looked at Ashley.“Do you two know each other?”
Although the question was directed at Kelly’s mother, his gaze remained fixed on Ashley. Ashley ignored him, but Kelly’s mother said, “We’re neighbors.”
Sensing the tension, and Ashley’s obvious unwillingness to engage with Chase, Kelly’s mother quickly found an excuse to leave.

Ashley had participated in similàr events when Sam first started kindergarten, but not after Sam left with Chase last year. The first game was “Chair Grab.” The rules: Chairs were arranged in a circle, two fewer than the number of participating families. Parents and children circled the chairs to music. When the music stopped, parents had to grab a chair. Families without a chair were eliminated. The last family remaining won.
Chase looked at Ashley.“You or me?”
Before Ashley could suggest he go, Sam said, “Daddy, you go!”
Chase looked at Ashley.“What do you think?”
“You go,” Ashley said.“Here,” he offered his phone.“Use this to film.”
