Chapter 381
They looked from Chase to Ashley, then to Tanya, their brows furrowing slightly.
In the silence, Chase said, “Haven’t played in a while?”
Ashley, dissecting his strategy, hummed in response without looking up. She hadn’t played since marrying him.
“You seem a little rusty,” Chase commented.
Ashley remained focused on the game. The situation was unfavorable. There seemed to be a clear path near Chase, but he’d laid hidden traps, waiting for her to fall into his snare.
After a moment’s thought, she avoided his traps, placing a stone elsewhere. The situation shifted. Chase was now on the defensive. He raised an eyebrow, a faint smile playing on his lips before making his move. The game became tense once more.
After several exchanges, Ashley lost by a narrow margin.
“A pity,” Ji Lao said.“But this game was more exciting than the last. Without the first–mover advantage, you anticipated your opponent’s strategy, using calculated risks and hidden moves to disrupt their attacks. Impressive observation, memory, and strategic thinking for someone so young.” He then declared, “Even I couldn’t beat her.”
Qin Lao nodded.“I know.” He wouldn’t have played as effectively as Ashley against Chase. As Ashley packed up the stones, Chase said, “Another game?” Tanya’s lips tightened. Before Ashley could respond, someone suggested, “The difference was so slight! Another game might win it!”
Ashley shook her head.“No.” The game had been close, but she wasn’t sure if her perceived understanding of Chase’s strategy was genuine or a deliberate illusion.
