Ashley had just driven away when Amanda said, “Chase was at the hospital. Where’s Sam? Where did he go?”
Before Ashley could answer, Amanda‘ face darkened. Ashley knew she was upset that Chase had left Sam alone for Tanya.
“He should have had everything taken care of,” Ashley said.
Amanda didn’t believe her.“If he does this again, Ashley, sue him! Get Sam’s custody no matter what!”
Ashley paused before saying calmly, “Okay.”
Amanda was still unhappy. When they arrived, she got out first. Ashley’s phone rang. It was Sam. Ashley didn’t answer. She hadn’t spent much time with Sam in the past few months. She’d noticed Sam got more dependent on he, like the old times. But…
Her phone rang again. She still didn’t answer; she even turned it off and went into the dining room to have dinner. But as she sat down, the landline rang. She knew who it was.
“I’ll get it,” she said, leaving the dining room.
It was Sam.“Mommy!”
Ashley answered.“Did
you eat?”
“Not yet,” Sam’s voice was downcast.“Mommy, are you at Grandma’s? I want to go there. Can you keep me company for dinner?”
Amanda looked over.“Is that Sam?”
Ashley said, “Yes.”
“Does Sam miss you?” Amanda put down her chopsticks.“If he wants to come, have him brought over. We’ll save some food for him.”
Ashley couldn’t refuse.“…Okay.” She told Sam, “You can come now.”
“Okay!”
Before hanging up, Ashley remembered something.“Tell your father.”
“Got it.”
The Joneses wanted to wait for Sam, but Ashley told them to keep eating.
About an hour later, Sam arrived. He ran to Ashley.“Mommy! I’m
I’m back!”
“Yes,” Ashley straightened his clothes. “I’ll heat up your food.”
“Okay!”
Sam put down his bag and iPad, following Ashley into the kitchen. Steve and his wife had taken Sheldon and Henry to school, but Amanda was still home. Seeing Sam cling to Ashley, she smiled and didn’t interrupt their reunion. Ashley sent Sam out to wait for her. He obediently sat in the dining room.
Sam was picky, but he ate happily while sharing his day.“Mommy, I played with Uncle Zark and Betty today.”
“Oh.”

Ashley asked, “What did

you guys do?”
“We went through a maze.”
Ashley remained neutral, but Amanda frowned. She’d thought Chase would take care of Sam himself, but he’d had someone else do it and hadn’t let him stay with Ashley.
Sam continued, “Uncle Zark invited me for dinner, but I wanted to eat here, so I called you.”
“I see.” Ashley calmly asked, “Did you thank Uncle Zark?”
“Yes!” Sam cheerfully said.
Ashley didn’t ask further. After Sam finished his homework, he stayed with Ashley and Amanda. Amanda asked, “Sam, do you want to stay longer?”
Before Ashley could speak, Sam happily said, “Yes!”
Amanda added, “Since you promised, you can’t go back on it. At least a week!”
“Okay!”
Ashley frowned. Amanda was happy, patting Sam’s hand. While Sam was playing his iPad, Amanda told Ashley, “You raised him, and I can tell he’s still very attached to you.”
Ashley didn’t know what to say. Sam asked Ashley to play a game with him. Ashley looked at him.“Are you sure?” She thought Sam might soon regret it and want to go back to Chase and Tanya.
Sam didn’t understand at first. After a moment, he nodded eagerly.“Of course, I promised Great–grandmother.”
Ashley said nothing. Sam remembered something.“I haven’t told Daddy yet. I’ll call him.
Chase answered quickly. Hearing what Sam told him, he said,“Okay, I know. If you need anything, call me, and I’ll have it sent.”
Sam was happy.“Okay.”
He hung up. Amanda had been worried Chase would object and even wanted to stop Sam from calling him. But she knew she shouldn’t. Seeing Sam so happy, she asked, “He agreed?”
“Of course!” Sam seemed puzzled.“Shouldn’t he agree?”
He said to Amanda, “Daddy is the best. He usually agrees with whatever I want to do.”
Amanda was speechless.
Ashley didn’t comment. Later, she took Sam upstairs to bathe.
