Chapter 15
Whether in his past life or this one, Nathan had always been a practical person.
“Mrs. Finn, do I really have to go?” Nathan asked
Layla looked surprised at first, but then she seemed to understand.
“Fearless as you are, now you’re shy about speaking on stage? Don’t worry, it’s just a simple sharing of study tips and a few words of encouragement.”
Nathan was caught off guard. It was just talking to a group of students. What was there to be shy about?
“Mrs. Finn, it’s not about being shy. It’s just… This doesn’t benefit me at all. If I have the time, I’d rather use it to solve a few more questions.”
Mrs. Finn hadn’t expected that response.
Getting up on stage, talking about grand strategies, delivering an inspiring speech, and becoming the center of attention at school–shouldn’t he feel honored?
Layla frowned as she tried to find the right words. She was thinking of how to appeal to his sense of class pride and convince him to change his mind.
Having Nathan speak at the motivational assembly would be a proud moment for her, and for Class 6 of senior year, it would bring glory.
Before she could say anything, Nathan continued, “Mrs. Finn, how about we give this opportunity to Justin? He’s the one with the most sense of class pride–not like me. I don’t really care about group activities.”
Layla was speechless. Since Nathan had said that, what else could she say?
It was the principal who had personally decided that Nathan should speak at the motivational assembly. If she couldn’t even manage her own student after three years, the other teachers would surely mock her.
“You…” Layla sighed, both amused and frustrated. After a moment of thought, she came up
with an idea.
“Alright, how about this? If you agree to give the speech, I’ll talk to Mr. Sawyer from Class One. I’ll make sure he doesn’t stir up any more trouble about you and Lily having lunch together. It’s just lunch, nothing worth gossiping over.”
“Well, in that case, sure! Uh, Mrs. Finn, I’ll head back to class now.” Nathan turned and hurried out of the office as if he was afraid she’d change her mind.
“Wait a second… Did that boy just trick me?” Layla frowned but then shook her head with at
smile.
Chapter 15
It couldn’t be. There was no way a high school student like Nathan could have outsmarted her, a woman in her 40s. It had to be her imagination.
Surely, there was no way he could’ve known she’d use sorting things out with Greg as a bargaining chip to get him to give the speech.
Nathan, on the other hand, had known that Layla would use that to get him on stage. As he hurried out of the office, he silently congratulated himself on his cleverness.
Honestly, he didn’t care too much if Greg wanted to meddle in his and Lily’s friendship, trying to break them up. But he didn’t want it to cause any unnecessary trouble for Lily.
So, getting Layla to handle Greg was the best solution.
When Nathan walked back into the classroom, he noticed the other students looking at him.
It was clear that, for the next while, Nathan would be the most popular guy in class.
“Uh… Oscar, where are my exam papers?”
When Nathan sat down, he was puzzled to find that, except for his Hanvian paper, all his other papers were missing.
Oscar mumbled, “The other classmates took them. They want to see how you scored so high.” Nathan nodded and didn’t think much of it.
