Chapter 48 Who’s the Unnecessary One?
A combination of hospital ward rounds, rain, and traffic made Cyrus late.
Henry exhaled a thick puff of smoke, the haze swirling around him as his dark eyes flashed with complicated emotions.

But just as quickly as they appeared, they vanished, leaving only a shadowed emptiness that no one could peer into.
“No,” he said, his voice sharp and deliberate.
He wasn’t falling for Shana, and he never would.
Even Damon, a seasoned veteran in the game of love, couldn’t tell whether Henry was speaking honestly or just being stubborn.
Cyrus, his hand tightening on the golden door handle, quickly relaxed again. He didn’t enter but walked
away.
Ring! The phone buzzed. Damon glanced at it and pursed his lips.
“Henry, Cyrus has surgery tomorrow morning and needs to sleep early, so he won’t be coming.”
Henry nodded faintly, his gaze shifting toward the window. The rain had only gotten heavier, accompanied by flashes of lightning and the rumble of thunder.
“Don’t worry. He’s not coming to keep you company, but I’ll stay with you!”
Damon leaned in, his voice teasing as he mimicked a dramatic gesture. He said playfully, “I’ll always put you first, darling.”
“Get lost.”
“Okay–dokey!”
Shana was young, and with a strong constitution, she recovered quickly after a few days. Her illness faded away, and she was back on her feet, vibrant once more.
Of course, part of the reason she got better so quickly was Henry’s decision to hire a caregiver to look after
her.
Although the sc*mbag had his own motives, she didn’t feel the need to reject it. After all, she was the one who was sick, and she wasn’t about to suffer just because of pride.
The wedding arrived as scheduled.
The Kellers were also an established aristocratic family in Portchester. While their wealth wasn’t as vast as the Floyds or the Grants, they held significant political influence, making them an important family in

The marriage between Eric, the Kellers‘ sole heir, and the daughter of the Parkers was a big deal. The betrothal and wedding gifts were so extravagant that they could blind anyone who looked at them.
The guests were all notable figures from the upper echelons of society, with a large portion of the clite crowd gathering together.
The Kellers spared no expense, renting a three–tier luxury yacht for the wedding. They beautifully decorated the banquet hall, bringing the vast starry sky indoors.
Shana walked in, arm linked with Henry’s. As always, all eyes turned to them.
But Shana knew that the focus wasn’t on her. It was for Henry. No matter where they were, he was always the center of attention, even if the event wasn’t his.
She could clearly catch the amazement and hungry glances from the socialites when they looked at him, not even sparing a thought for her.
In the past, she would have been angry and jealous, wishing she could hide Henry from these women.
But she had to pretend to be gentle and virtuous, afraid that if she didn’t, she wouldn’t meet the image of the wife that Henry wanted.
But now …
Shana smiled slightly, then, with a deliberate motion, pinched Henry’s waist hard.
Henry let out a sharp hiss, frowning at her. “Why did you pinch me?”
“I didn’t,” Shana lied with a straight face.
“You did!”
Henry’s cold gaze fixed on her guilty hand. “Shana, do you think I’m an idiot?”
Couldn’t he feel it?
Shana shrugged. “If you say so, then I must have.”
“You!”
Just then, someone came over to greet Henry. Shana seized the opportunity and said, “Someone’s coming, Mr. Floyd; don’t forget we’re playing the loving couple!
Henry saw her cheeky attitude, but he couldn’t do anything about it, his teeth grinding in frustration.
After making the rounds and greeting a number of guests, Shana’s smile was starting to look a little stiff. The stylist had chosen a pair of high heels several inches tall to complement her long gown. The height was exhausting, and the new shoes were rubbing against her feet.
In the past, no matter how tired or uncomfortable she was, she would have forced herself to stay by Henry’s side. But now she wasn’t going to sacrifice her comfort. With an apologetic expression, she said, “Henry, I’m going to the restroom.”

Henry could tell from her tone that she wasn’t really apologizing; she was clearly trying to avoid staying. His eyes flickered with displeasure, but he didn’t object “Go ahead.
Shana immediately released his arm, flashed a polite smile at the others, and gracefully walked away.
The luxurious yacht’s restroom was just as lavish, with a dedicated makeup area. The lighting was perfect, and the air smelled of a pleasant fragrance.
Shana wasn’t in the mood to return to the hall and play the part of a tool, so she walked into the makeup arca, thinking she could get a bit of rest.
There were several socialites there, all fixing their makeup in front of the mirrors.
She didn’t attract any attention, quietly choosing a sofa in the corner. After sitting down, she kicked off her high heels and began massaging her aching calves.
Where there are women, there’s always gossip.
Socialite A, while applying lipstick, sighed. “Look at this wedding. Mr. Eric really must love Ms. Parker to the core to make such a big deal out of it.”
Socialite B agreed, “Of course, it’s different from other aristocratic marriages. For most, it’s just a formality. But Mr. Eric and Ms. Parker grew up together. Their love is real–something most of us can’t envy.”
Socialite A suddenly seemed to remember something and sneered, “This wedding reminds me of Mr. Floyd and his unremarkable wife. The Floyds‘ heir should have had a grand wedding, but three years have passed, and they still haven’t even had one.”
The mention of the Floyds got the others excited, and they eagerly joined in on the conversation.
Socialite C chimed in, “Shana was shoved onto Mr. Floyd by his grandfather. He reluctantly married her, so why would he want to have a wedding? What’s ridiculous is that Shana doesn’t even know her own place. A woman with such a lowly background, relying only on her looks, is really delusional.”
The laughter echoed in the room.
Shana’s expression remained unchanged.
Over the years, at every event like this, she had heard words like these–some even worse.
At first,.she was angry, upset, and hurt, but she was numb to it now.
She had endured it before to maintain her reputation, but now she wasn’t going to let these gossiping women off the hook.
Shana tapped the heel of her high–heeled shoe on the coffee table, making a sharp, clear sound that drew the attention of everyone in the room.
With a half–smile, she said, “No wonder it’s so noisy here. It turns out that the noise is simply the barking of a group of dogs.”
The room fell into eerie silence.

After a few glances exchanged, the socialites quickly dispersed.

Suddenly, a voice broke the silence. “Shana, you sure have a lot of power. Can’t you take the truth? A forced marriage will never last.”
A woman emerged from another corner, stood in front of her, and cast a shadow.
Shana looked up, raising an eyebrow. “Homewrecker, you’re still haunting me, huh?”
She hadn’t expected to see Kate today.
After all the times she had attended events with Henry, this was the first time Kate was present.
Kate wore loose clothing and flat shoes. Her face appeared slightly rounder, hinting at a possible
pregnancy.
Was that why? Perhaps now that she was set to become Henry’s legal wife, she no longer felt the need to conceal it
Shana’s hand clenched unconsciously.
Kate’s expression darkened. Her words should have shaken Shana, but to her surprise, Shana showed no reaction.
Of course a b*tch like Shana had no shame.
Suppressing her anger, Kate sneered. “Shana, stop calling me a mistress. The person who is truly unnecessary in this relationship is you. Today, I’m going to show you exactly who the real burden is!”
Shana felt unlucky to encounter her. She was uninterested in interacting with her and quickly put her shoes back on before leaving.
But just as she stepped out of the restroom, Kate rushed up from behind. As they brushed past each other, Kate’s knee gave way, and she collapsed onto the floor.
When the guests turned to look, they saw Kate gazing at Shana with tear–filled eyes, accusing her in a pitiful tone. “Mrs. Floyd, why did you push me?”
