She had been disappointed so many times that, at this homent, it didn’t even surprise her. In fact, it felt almost like she had expected it.
Shana took a sip of her black coffee, then grabbed her phone to call a cab.
The car arrived quickly. She stood up, slipped on her coat, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and pushed her suitcase out the door.
Judy, who had been wiping down the furniture, immediately rushed over to help her with the luggage. However, upon reaching the outside and spotting the taxi, she couldn’t resist asking, “Mrs. Floyd, are you leaving alone? Didn’t Mr. Floyd ask you to wait for him
Over the years, it had become routine for Shana to travel alone each year for her family memorials. It was always a bit heart–wrenching for Judy. This year, it was rare for Mr. Floyd to take time out of his schedule to accompany her. It had felt like their relationship had finally improved.
Shana was bending down to enter the car; she paused at Judy’s words. She tilted her head and replied in a neutral tone, “He won’t come.”
The empty promises Henry had made to her were not worth believing anymore.
She had never waited for him to show up, so why waste her time now?
Her voice was soft, emotionless, as if she were commenting on the weather. But the words twisted in Judy’s heart, leaving her with a heavy feeling.
Judy had seen how cold Henry was toward Shana since their marriage. She had witnessed it all. Even now, despite her desire to defend him, she couldn’t bring herself to say a word.
She swallowed her thoughts and only reminded Shana to be careful on the road.
Shana responded. She climbed into the car and shut the door decisively.
At the airport, she checked in, passed through security, and boarded the plane, moving with the same calm composure. It was as if Henry’s absence made no difference to her.
Only when the flight attendant announced that the plane was about to take off did Shana lift her head from the magazine she had been reading. She glanced at the empty seat beside her.
Larry had booked a pair of seats, and Henry’s was right next to hers.
Shana pulled out her phone, but the chatting page was empty. She gave a self–deprecating smile, then quickly turned off the device.
The plane soared into the sky.
Two hours later, Shana stepped out of the airport with her luggage. The place was far from the city, and she had to take a long bus ride to reach the small town.
Audrey was eagerly waiting at the entrance. As soon as Audrey’spotted her granddaughter, she didn’t need any assistance and quickly made her way over.

“Shana, I’ve missed you so much!” Audrey exclaimed.
Shana smiled and opened her arms to embrace her. “Grandma, I’ve missed you too!”

But the moment they parted, Audrey glanced around, searching for someone behind her, only to be disappointed when she didn’t see who she expected. “Sana, where’s Henry? Didn’t he come back with you?”
Audrey’s practicality was striking.
Shana, not in the mood for games, replied with a hint of sarcasm, “Grandma, who are you really looking for? Me, or Henry?”
Audrey responded, unashamed, “I’m looking for you, of course, but I also wanted to see Henry. You’ve been married for a long time, yet I’ve never even met him. The entire village is abuzz, questioning whether I’ve been boastful. They’re saying you must’ve married someone no one can be proud of, and that’s why you won’t bring him back. It makes me so mad.”
By the end, Audrey felt slightly wronged.
Life in the countryside was quiet and predictable. The women gathered to gossip about family matters. The main topics of conversation were who married well, whose daughter lived in a larger house, and what their husbands were like.
Naturally, Audrey couldn’t escape these conversations. When she learned that her granddaughter had married into the wealthiest family in Portchester and became a mistress of the house, she proudly shared it with everyone.
At first, people envied Shana, waiting for the day she would bring Henry back so they could see what the rich heir was like. But after one year–then two, then three–and still no sign of him, the rumors began to spread.
Audrey was a proud woman. It hurt her to see Shana’s reputation tarnished by idle gossip. She had grown anxious about the situation.
Shana felt a sharp pang of distress.
Because of Henry’s behavior, Audrey, who had a deep love for her granddaughter, had undoubtedly become the focus of village gossip. Audrey was protective, and Shana could only imagine how many times she had been hurt by these rumors.
She paid a price for being so blindly in love.
“Grandma, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.” Shana’s voice turned slightly raspy.
Audrey’s expression hardened, as if she had realized something. She grabbed Shana’s hand, her voice trembling with concern. “So, Henry still couldn’t make it? Didn’t he promise me?”
“He…
”
Shana hesitated, unable to bring herself to tell Audrey the harsh truth.
At that moment, her desire to kill Henry reached its peak. He had repeatedly broken his promises to her, and now he had let Audrey down as well.

If he couldn’t do something, he shouldn’t have promised it. Leading people on like this was cruel.

Audrey saw the look on Shana’s face and immediately knew. She staggered, and Shana rushed to steady her. “Grandma, what’s wrong?”
Audrey weakly muttered, “It’s over. You and Henry still haven’t had your wedding. I was hoping that since he’s with you, we could at least have a simple banquet here in the village, introduce him to everyone, and show the people who doubted you that you really did marry into a good family.”
Silence lingered in the air.
Shana hadn’t even thought of that, and now she was stunned.
She swallowed a few times, then asked in a shaky voice, Audrey, you’re still just thinking about it, right? It’s not set in stone, is it?”
She stared at Audrey, hoping for some sign that it wasn’t too late to stop that.
Audrey covered her face, her voice quivering. She stated candidly, “We have scheduled the banquet for tomorrow evening. The invitations have already been sent out. The whole village knows you’re bringing your rich husband back.”
Shana’s vision immediately went dark.
Her grandmother might be struggling with her health, but that didn’t stop her from being a go–getter.
“What are we going to do, Shana? Henry’s not coming, and tomorrow they’ll probably laugh at us even
more.”
The thought of becoming the subject of ridicule, of being known as a liar, made Audrey panic even more.
Shana was startled. She patted her back and tried to calm her down. “Grandma, don’t worry. I’ll figure something out.”
“What can you do? Can you make him come here? Can you make him show up at the banquet tomorrow?”
Shana was speechless.
“You always say nice things to coax me.” Audrey, disappointed and hurt, pushed her hand away and headed toward the house.
Her steps were slow and unsteady.
Shana watched her, tears filling her eyes. Audrey only wanted to meet her husband, whom she had been married to for three years. Such a simple wish, and yet Shana had failed to fulfill it.
She felt utterly useless.
“Shana.”
A man’s voice called out, carried by the night breeze, like a soft hand brushing against her cheek.
Shana’s heart raced.
