Shana’s heart gave a small, involuntary flutter.
She had to admit, the sc*mbag did have some charm.

When sober, his gaze was always cold and distant, filled with the aloofness of someone in power. Even when they were together in bed, he never showed much tenderness.
But once he’d had a few drinks, his gaze became afftectionate and intense, soft like the eyes of a deer, making you feel irresistibly drawn in, as if you’d give him anything–even your life.
For the past three years of marriage, she had repeatedly fallen into this trap. Over and over, she told herself, Henry can’t love me, right? No, he was just born with an indifferent nature.
She just had to try harder, a little more each time, and eventually she would find her way into his heart.
Upon contemplating this, those fleeting thoughts of romance swiftly faded away. Shana smiled coldly and warned, “Don’t push your luck.”
Henry frowned, clearly not getting the answer he wanted. He shot her a glance and took the milk from her hands, drinking it without a word.
He had never liked the taste of plain milk; he found it too earthy, but every time Shana insisted he drink it to prevent a hangover, he would reluctantly comply.
She used numerous subtle tactics to persuade him, treating him as if he were a child.
At first, he had scorned her, thinking how childish she was. He wasn’t a little kid, after all. But she was persistent, so stubborn that no matter how many times he refused, she kept at it.
Eventually, there was one time, when her eyes had welled up with tears, looking at him with that desperation. He couldn’t help but feel sorry for her.
That was the first time he had seen her cry since their wedding, apart from the times he had purposely made her shed tears on bed.
He had softened then, yielding to her persistence and drinking the milk he hated. Now, he was used to it.
The milk was always just the right temperature, perfect for drinking. Henry finished it in one gulp, absently tapping his fingers on the cup.
His voice was raspy when he spoke. “Shana, are you happy today?”
Shana paused, taken aback by the question. She replied, nonchalantly, “It’s okay.”
Clearly, that wasn’t the answer Henry was hoping for. He frowned again, and he shifted closer to her, \almost unconsciously.
His voice dropped, sounding a little more serious now. Why are you so hard to please these days?”
In the past, a simple glance, a smile, a phone call, or, at worst, a gift of jewelry, clothes, or shoes would make her grin foolishly.

off.
“It’s late. You should go to bed. I won’t bother you. I’ll sleep with Grandma tonight.”
Without another word, she stood and quickly headed for the door.
Henry’s dark eyes followed her, growing more confused. After all he’d done, why was she dissatisfied?
Shana went out into the garden and sat on the swing.
Her father had built this swing while he was still alive. When she was little, she loved sitting on it while her father pushed her higher and higher.
Back then, her mother would sit beside them, teasing him. “You spoil her so much. When she grows up, her standards will be sky–high, and she won’t be able to find a man to marry her.”
Her father would laugh and say, “Our Shana takes after you, beautiful like you. But she takes after me in brains; she’s clever. She’ll find a husband who loves her even more than I do. You don’t have to worry.”
“Right, my little Shana?”
With her sweet voice, she’d agree, “Yes!”
At that time, she was just a child, naive about love, but those words stuck with her.
She’d remembered them for years.
But things hadn’t gone as planned. She hadn’t married someone who truly loved her. Instead, she foolishly gave away her heart, only to have it trampled on and crushed.
Suddenly, Shana slapped herself hard across the face.
Wake up.
Shana, wake up!
The next day.
Audrey heard that a medical team was doing free checkups at the park, so she grabbed the back of her head and said, “Shana, I think my chest’s a little tight. Come with me to get checked out.”
Shana gave her a look, not holding back, and exposed her. “Your chest’s tight, and you’re holding the back of your head?
The old lady was rendered speechless.
Then, she quickly switched to covering her chest.
Seeing her dramatic act, Shana shook her head, laughing. She knew Audrey was just showing off after stealing the spotlight yesterday, eager to show off again today.

Life in the country was simple, and this was the only fun they could find. Shana was happy to indulge her.
“Fine, let’s go.”
After changing and telling Grace where she was going, Shana headed out with Audrey to the park.
When they arrived, Shana scanned the area, and suddenly her eyes widened.
