Chapter 27 I Hate You
“Celeste, thank you for making the divorce so swift and giving Nate back to me,” Madelynn said haughtily, chin lifted.
“Being the legitimate miss of the Hartley family, Nathaniel’s parents both adore me. Do you know what Nate’s mom says about you? You’re just a nanny for the Rowe family, hardly his wife.
“You do their laundry and cook for them every day, yet they don’t appreciate you one bit. Instead, they treat you like a maid, expecting you to come and go at their beck and call. That’s all you are to them. Do you know why?”
Celeste stared at her coldly, remaining silent.
She knew Nathaniel’s mother, sister, and brother all disliked her.
Only his grandmother was fond of her.
In the Rowe household, she heard the most vicious words she’d ever encountered in her life.
But for Nathaniel’s e, she endured it all.

Madelynn smirked. “Because of who you are. You’re an orphan. Sure, our family raised you, but you grew up in the countryside. You’re not even on our family registry.”
“So why should I consider myself your family’s adopted daughter? I’m just me. Don’t lump me in with the Hartleys.”

Celeste cut her off. She couldn’t choose the circumstances of
her birth. As a baby, she had no say in her fate.
“Your father knew I was switched at birth but chose to hide
the truth. You don’t need to mock me. Whatever kind of person
I am, it’s none of your business.”
She’d never wanted to mess with Madelynn.
She lived by a simple code. As long as no one messed with her,
she wouldn’t mess with anyone else.
But if someone crossed the line after being warned, she would
retaliate twofold.
“Well, well” Madelynn sneered. “Guess you can’t escape your trashy roots, mix–up or not. Your real family’s probably just as bad. Listen up. Celeste. Stay away from Nathaniel, or you’ll regret it.*
With that final threat, Madelynn sauntered off, the picture of elegance.

Celeste let out a bitter laugh, but her heart ached something
fierce.
Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones, but she felt hot tears
start to fall.
“Nathaniel, I hate you,” she whispered and thought, “How could he betray me?”
Not in the mood for the party, Celeste headed for a nearby lounge.
Once her footsteps faded, Nathaniel emerged from the
restroom.
He watched her go, recalling her tearful words, “Nathaniel, I hate you.” His eyes darkened with unreadable emotion, a
storm of feelings barely held in check.
He turned and walked in the opposite direction, his gaze cold and mysterious.
Alone, Celeste reached a stand decorated with daffodils and
several bunches of lilies.
She loved roses, but she was thorny, like her personality.
Uncontrollably, she recalled the scene where Nathaniel had

given her roses. “Our cold Ms. Hartley, these red roses with thorns suit you well, look how they’ve made my hands bleed.”
She always teased him, “Nathaniel, you’re so clumsy, always. getting pricked by the rose thorns.”
“Hehe… Celeste, you just don’t get it. I keep them close to my heart because you like them. I treasure them every time I step out.”
She felt speechless but happy. He really knew how to cater to her tastes.
They were in love, and they drifted apart. They were strangers
now…
Celeste felt a crushing pain in her chest as she gazed blankly at the scenery.
Celeste chuckled softly, mocking her naive 18–year–old self for misplacing her affections and throwing caution to the wind.
Celeste’s sad thoughts were interrupted by a piercing scream nearby.
