She took the tray to his office. The door was open. As she was about to knock, she saw Tanya sitting on Chase’s lap, kissing him.

Ashley clutched the tray.“I brought you coffee.”
“Ashley,”

Ashley’s eyes welled up. Her hands trembled. Coffee spilled, burning her fingers. She didn’t cry out but turned to leave. “Don’t come back,” Chase called from his office. She’d already resigned. She’d leave after her replacement was found. But no one cared, and saying anything was pointless.
Before leaving, she heard Tanya soothing Chase.“Don’t be mad, she didn’t mean to…”
Ashley dumped the coffee, rinsed her burn, and applied ointment.
She was a great cook and barista now, but she knew nothing of this before she married Chase. She’d learned everything for him and Sam. Only she knew how hard it had been. That was why she always carried ointment. But since Sam left with Chase, she seldom needed it.

back

documents
when she heard someone
