Chapter 5
I caught a glimpse of myself in the rearview mirror, my tailored casual suit a stark contrast to the demure dresses I used to wear around him.
In the three years he was gone, I started my own company, handled business negotiations and even learned to fix my own plumbing.
I never needed him to survive.
As for driving-
“No need, I’m probably more familiar with it than you are.”
Besides, I was taking Sophia to cancel her domestic identity today.
Three hours later, after we finished the paperwork, we came out to see James’s car parked outside. He was staring at me with
a furrowed brow.
“Lily, what are you doing here with our daughter?”
He walked over and saw me holding Sophia, coming out after three hours. I don’t know why, but I felt a knot of unease in my
chest.
I smiled lightly. “Nothing. Just renewing our IDs, they expired.”
“Aren’t you busy today? I heard Jessica’s been looking for a job. She probably needs you.”
James stared at me intently, his expression unreadable.
After a long pause, he sneered. “Lily, you’re doing quite well.”
“I’ve never seen anyone push their husband away like this. Since you said so, I’ll do as you wish.”
The car door slammed shut, and James’s car quickly disappeared.
I didn’t understand–why was he angry when I was just letting them have their way?
It was only from James’s assistant that I learned what had happened.
“Madam, Mr. Dean specifically took a day off to accompany you and the child. Why did you make him leave?”
“Now, he’s gotten himself drunk and is over at Jessica’s place with her and Amy…”
The assistant had always thought James and I were a perfect match and had tried to bring us back together.
But now, I laughed bitterly. “Thank you, but let him be.”
After all, in three days, Sophia and I would be gone.
What I never expected was that on the same day I was helping Sophia transfer schools, Amy pushed her into the water, causing an emergency.
I desperately rushed Sophia to the hospital.

But the hospital told me that James had rerouted the city’s medical resources to treat Amy’s allergic reaction.
Seeing Sophia’s pale face, I frantically dialed James’s number, begging him to save Sophia.
On the other end, Jessica’s cries echoed. He sounded overwhelmed, but he coldly laughed.
“Lily, what are you pretending for? Sophia is fine. How could she possibly be in trouble?”
“That day, I was with you. You pushed me out. Now, Amy is seriously allergic, and you’re playing tricks because of jealousy?”
I felt a metallic taste in my throat. Just as I was about to explain, the phone went dead with a busy signal.
I was submerged in despair.
I expected Sophia to cry, but to my surprise, she calmly looked at me, breathing through the oxygen mask.
“Mom, Dad really doesn’t want me anymore, right?”
She smiled weakly, wiping my tears with her fragile hand.
“Don’t cry, Mom. I don’t want Dad either.”
Eventually, I called my dad, and using his connections, managed to bring in a top–tier doctor from a neighboring city.
During the days we stayed in the hospital, James never appeared.
Meanwhile, on TV, they were broadcasting the heroic story of James mobilizing all of the city’s medical resources to save people.
I stared coldly at the worried face on the screen.
James, since you love them so much, I’m letting you have them.
The day Sophia was discharged, I canceled our domestic IDs, deleted James’s contact information, and broke my phone card. I left the city with Sophia…
