Chapter 1
The plane had landed, but the two people in the front seats were still entangled, unwilling to part.
With my large belly, now nearly ready to deliver, I took a taxi alone to the hospital.
I paid extra, and the test results came back quickly.
The child in my womb had no blood relation to me.
I was naturally frail and had difficulty conceiving.
For this IVF baby, I had spent two years preparing, undergoing no less than five egg retrieval surgeries, two of which had triggered severe complications.
When I first experienced complications, Yancy was so panicked, his eyes reddened as he held me, crying, saying he didn’t like children and we should stop trying.
But I was determined to have a child–a symbol of our love.
While I eagerly awaited the birth of our child, he told me it was the child of him and his mistress.
I once thought the bond we shared as childhood sweethearts could overcome any hardship.
Yet it still lost to his wandering heart.
The hospital’s big screen played footage of Yancy receiving his championship trophy after winning a Go competition yesterday.
“I want to thank my wife for her constant support. Soon, she’ll give birth to the crystallization of our love.
On her behalf, I’m donating $2 million each to the UN Children’s Fund and the World Medical Association. I hope my wife receives everyone’s blessings and safely becomes the most beautiful mother…”
People around me couldn’t stop praising:
“What a godsend of a husband-$2 million just to get a few blessings for his wife.”
“He really loves her so much. I envy them.”
“I heard he even booked an entire wellness retreat for her to give birth. She must’ve saved the galaxy in her past life.”
Yes, he loved me.

But that didn’t stop him from flirting with other women.
A bitter pain exploded in my chest, quickly rising to my throat. For a moment, I could barely breathe.
Everyone knew how much Yancy loved me.
He was a genius Go player. When we were students, he nearly ruined his hands trying to rescue me from a group of thugs
When he proposed to me, he was so nervous that he trembled, his legs nearly giving out, even though he never flinched during world class competitions.
When my IVF worked, he knelt and kowtowed several times, crying uncontrollably,
He held me, saying he’d give his life to ease my pain during pregnancy and childbirth.
The doctor, moved to tears, said: “I’ve never seen such a devoted husband. If I were you, I’d be crazy with happiness.”
But now, those words and the image of him with another woman clashed in my mind, tearing my heart
in two. One half shattered, the other quietly waiting to shatter.
I couldn’t understand it–how could someone who loved me so much make me carry the child of him and
another woman?
I sat there on the hospital bench in a daze, until someone suddenly rushed towards me, and I realized how late it had gotten.
Yancy, eyes bloodshot, held me tightly, desperately touching my face, his voice thick with fear:
“Ana, why didn’t you pick up the phone? Are you trying to kill me?”
“Do you know how worried I was when I didn’t see you at home? If I couldn’t find you, I might have gone
crazy!”
His voice was filled with madness and terror.
I gently raised my hand and felt the dirt and grit on it, then realized his clothes were a mess, as though he
had rolled in the mud.
“I was so anxious, I wasn’t paying attention, tripped and fell a few times, but it’s fine, I’m just glad I found
you…”
He hugged me tightly, kissing my face, tears streaming down.
Though his actions were familiar, I felt estranged, and no sense of warmth stirred within me.

I numbly replied: “My phone died, so it was off.”
