The air froze with heaviness as the invisible tension struck us like a lightning bolt, making Leo look at Melody. His disappointment was evident from his cold gaze, blaming her for Zoe’s sadness.
Disturbed by this silent blaming, Melody looked at me absent–mindedly, as if it was my fault that Zoe uttered such heartbreaking words.
Ignoring those failed parents, I glanced at Zoe’s teary face as he sniffled, trying to appear brave despite his young age. His desolation actually made me feel a bit distressed.
After all, I was a daughter who had yearned to feel her parents‘ love for a long time…
Every minute I stayed there, I felt like I couldn’t breathe, so I immediately left with my daughter. But Jane held Leo’s hand tightly and looked at me with pleading eyes.
WT…I tried to hold back the curse words that came out of my mouth. That was not what a graceful
mother should do.
I smiled gently, pried Jane’s hand away, and whispered, “Now we should go home, baby.”
Melody’s eyes almost pierced through me, but she didn’t say anything finally.
I grabbed Jane’s hand and we both walked towards our Range Rover, Echo opened the door for us and helped Jane to sit.
After getting seated, I rolled down the window as the driver ignited the engine, taking one last look at Leo’s family. A disdainful smile stretching my lips mirrored my bitterness as I swore.

Blinking my eyes repeatedly, I gasped for air and spoke with great difficulty,
“B–but I don’t like him, Jane.”
Being a gentle soul, Jane sensed my unease. She immediately cupped my face and spoke,
“If mommy doesn’t like him, then I don’t like him either.”
I smiled fondly and shook my head. It would be nice if that were the case, but I know Jane.
Next morning, I decided to drop Jane at school in person. I had learned my lesson the hard way after yesterday’s incident.
Before the kids could officially start school, the teacher gave me the notice of a parent meeting.
Holding my daughter’s hand, I walked inside the hall where the meeting was held, only to meet stubborn Zoe. He had already saved a seat for Jane,
Zoe stared at Jane silently but didn’t say anything. Perhaps he was a little embarrassed by what happened last time.
Jane was playing with the bow on her skirt out of boredom and said sincerely, “Are you inviting me to sit with you? Okay, I agree.” Then she took Zoe’s hand and sat down steadily.

This uncomfortable closeness, and whispering brought back a flood of memories of where Leo hated to take me to any party because of my weight, flexing Melody as his partner.
I felt bitter in my mouth, regretting my wasted time on him.
The parents meeting started without a delay and the teaching staff welcomed us, explaining the facilities for kids. I was waiting for the sports categories for young talent when a wave of strong feminine perfume invaded my nostrils, making me cover my face.
Whoever had worn this perfume must have had some serious issue with her sense of smell as this scent ached my head. I wondered how she could come to attend a meeting like this.
This horrendous introduction piqued my curiosity to see the face of that annoying lady, and soon, all my queries were answered.
Melody sashayed towards Leo, her red lips pursing with her every step as she stood right in front me and
said.
“Sorry, babe. I was caught up in work…”
As her excuses were none of my business, I focused my attention on the meeting. But Melody didn’t like my presence and ordered rudely,
“Get up. It’s my seat!”
