His eyes grew more desperate, his hall kneeling legs trembling uncontrollably.
I gave him a small, meaningless smile. “It’s nothing. I just read a novel earlier. Got a little emotional”
He let out a breath of relief, clutching his chest before embracing me tightly, murmuring with lingering
Don’t ever scare me like that again..”
I thought he would at least restrain himself after this.
But soon after, he left, using a meeting with sponsors as an excuse.
I knew he was inspecting the proposal site he had prepared for Xena.
Early that morning. Nena had already messaged me, boasting that Yancy had booked an entire scenic spot to give her the most extravagant, one of a kind proposal.
As soon as he left, another message arrived.
“You heard everything last night, didn’t you? But trust me, watching it is even more exciting.”
An explicit video thumbnail appeared on my screen.
Yancy was biting her earlobe, his face steeped in pleasure.
I typed a few words.
“Well shot.”
She responded with an eye–roll emoji.
“Pretending not to care? Inside, you must be fuming, right?”
“Your husband has been all over me every single day for the past two years. You didn’t even know, did you?”
“If you’re smart, give birth to the child and then get a divorce. I’ll even persuade him to give you a bit more child support–after all, you were just a free womb for us.”
I patiently replied to her, “Do you know that I’m Yancy’s manager? His reputation, wealth, and future are all in my hands.”
Chapter 4
Xena seemed momentarily stunned, After a while, she responded:
“All I know is that Yancy can’t bear to see me in pain. He says that only he is allowed to make me hurt, while others should suffer instead.
Besides, he doesn’t want to affect my career, so having you carry this child is the best option. He said it’s your last bit of value.”
“During the months you’ve been pregnant, I’ve been the one accompanying him as he competes
worldwide.
During the day, he competes; at night, he’s tangled up with me in bed. When you called us while vomiting your guts out, he couldn’t even bring himself to leave me.”
“Many times, before he returned home, he would linger in the car with me, unwilling to let go.”
“Only a fool like you would remain completely oblivious!”
The endless stream of messages pierced my eyes like daggers.
I thought of the hesitations on the other end of the phone, the thick scent of perfume lingering in his car.
My stomach churned, and I couldn’t help but break down in tears.
To conceive this child, I–a person terrified of pain–underwent five rounds of egg retrieval surgery.
The last time, the needle pierced my body, and the pain was so unbearable that I fainted on the spot.
Two severe complications left me drifting between consciousness and unconsciousness, causing me to lose 20 pounds and nearly costing me my life.
After finally getting pregnant, I suffered from relentless morning sickness, far worse than most.
Even when I was vomiting to the point of near collapse, I never thought about giving up.
I relied on my trust in Yancy, on my belief in his love, to grit my teeth and push through.
While he was away competing, I endured the agony and went to temples to pray for his success.
But he… was indulging in another woman’s embrace, reveling in pleasure in a foreign land.
While I was risking my life to give birth to his child, his heart had already strayed.
I bit down on my blanket, sobbing harder than I ever had before.
Turns out, I was the only one still standing in place.
