Chapter 110
Joshua’s lips were pale as paper and curled into a soft smile. “Alright, I promise you.”
Ben and Rose had just stepped out of the ICU when Ben’s phone buzzed urgently.
The caller was anxious. “Mr. Fisher, there’s trouble!”
Over at the detention center, Sue had claimed she was pregnant and needed a hospital check–up as per the rules. But on the way, another car recklessly rammed into the one she was in, forcing it off the road.
A group of burly men, all with impressive skills, jumped out and took Sue away. The staff member accompanying Sue was badly injured, and the car was too wrecked to give chase.
Ben listened, disbelief etched across his face. “She got kidnapped?”
“What happened? Who got kidnapped?” Rose asked, concerned.
Ben took a few deep breaths, his shoulders sagging. “It was Sue.”
“What!” Rose was stunned. “Wasn’t she already in custody?”
Ben frowned, deep in thought. “Dad was right. This isn’t as simple as the Reynolds family made out. Someone’s behind her, and we need to find out who that is, pronto.”
Joshua spent a few days in the ICU before being moved to a regular room. It felt like he’d been in a long dream. When he came to, his body was exhausted, and even breathing was a chore. He slowly opened his eyes to the sharp scent of antiseptic.
Sunlight streamed through the window, bathing his face. Joshua lifted a hand to shield his eyes from the glare but the IV needle tugged at his hand. Pain shot through him and he winced.
“You’re awake.” Allison appeared at the door, quickening her pace when she saw him. She set down a thermos she was carrying. “I just made you some food. Perfect timing; now you can eat.”
Joshua turned to look at the thermos on the bedside table, surprise flickering in his eyes. “You cooked?” “Yep.” Allison gave a shy smile. “I made it myself. Want to try it? It’s my first time cooking.”
Joshua gradually got used to the bright sunlight. His face softened in its warmth, a gentle glow in his eyes.
With a soft smile, he nodded, “Sure.”
Allison leaned closer, her floral and fruity scent enveloping Joshua. He thought she was about to hug or kiss him, his heart warmed sweetly, and a smile lingered in his eyes. As he braced for a kiss, he felt a mix of excitement and a bit of nervousness.
It would be the first time Allie made the first move.
But then, the headrest of the hospital bed slowly began to rise.
“I’ll adjust the bed so you can sit up and eat comfortably.”
Joshua felt a small pang of disappointment, though it was also amusing. He’d been acting like a teenager with a crush.
Allison set up a small table on the bed, laying a napkin on it before placing the thermos on top. She opened it, revealing sautéed green beans and beef.
“The doctor said to keep your diet light while you’re here. So I made green beans and beef, a balanc protein and veggies.”
