Chapter 56
As he noticed the girl’s ears turning a deep shade of red, Joshua couldn’t help but smile. His girl was adorably
shy.
The following day, Snow’s test results arrived, showing everything was normal. However, there was a peculiar scratch on the horse’s neck, likely from a needle. It was in a spot only someone on the horse could reach. Once Joshua found out, he decided not to visit Lillian at the hospital again. The Fisher family had arranged top–notch care for her, with a housekeeper delivering meals three times a day without fail.
Joshua spent his days by Allison’s side, helping her try on engagement dresses, picking out jewelry, and planning the engagement party. No matter how much drama Lillian caused, he never returned to the hospital.
When Lillian had her accident, Allison thought their wedding plans might be postponed. She didn’t expect Lillian’s schemes to backfire so spectacularly, speeding up Joshua’s confession instead of creating a rift.
After that night, Allison found herself warming up to Joshua. She wasn’t head over heels, not yet anyway. After a failed relationship with Zach, she wasn’t ready to fall for someone new so quickly. However, being unconditionally trusted and cherished was undeniably touching.
They set the engagement party for the fifteenth of next month. It was early October, leaving them just over a month to prepare.
One day, Joshua joined Allison on a shopping trip to a high–end boutique. In the VIP room, they relaxed on the sofa as models with similar figures to Allison showcased the season’s latest designs.
“That light blue dress is beautiful,” Joshua murmured in Allison’s ear.
“I think so too,” she agreed with a nod. “And that cream–colored coat is quite lovely.”
Just then, Allison’s phone buzzed. Respectfully, Joshua averted his gaze as she checked her messages. The text contained several photos of Kate and Zach together, seemingly taken in Arizona. Shortly after, Kate sent another message:
“He wouldn’t go with you, so I came in your place. Arizona is amazing, too bad you can’t see it.”
Allison rolled her eyes. She wasn’t gone, so why couldn’t she see it? During her relationship with Zach, she worked a nine–to–five job, eagerly awaiting her few holidays to travel. Traveling alone felt unsafe, so she wanted Zach with her. She had always been curious about visiting Arizona, having only traveled abroad before. Now, she could travel anywhere with just a word.
Allison didn’t reply. She considered blocking Kate but thought it could be amusing to see what else she might try. She decided to keep Kate around, like a quirky electronic pet.
Kate, snug in Zach’s embrace, sent those meticulously edited photos. Zach held her, watching as she sent them to Allison, eager for her reaction. Would she be upset? Jealous? He hadn’t spoken to Allison in days, so he let Kate send the photos, hoping to provoke a response.
Yet, Kate’s message went unanswered. “Did she block me?” Kate wondered aloud in Zach’s arms. “No, if she had, the texts wouldn’t go through.”
Zach offered an excuse for Allison, “Maybe she hasn’t seen it yet.”
Surely, she hadn’t seen it. If she had, she wouldn’t just ignore it. But even by the next night, Allison hadn’t responded. Zach grew restless. When Kate wasn’t around, he called his assistant, his expression darkening.
