Alexander POV

Angry didn’t even begin to describe how I felt. David Lake was once again complicating a situation that was already stressful enough. If he thought I’d let him cover up als schemes this time, he was dead wrong.
My rage was growing by the second and it felt like the elevator was descending more slowly than ever. I held Ella’s hand, hoping to offer her some comfort. At the moment, Idn’t trust myself to speak.
I could only imagine what was going through her mind. She had worked up the courage to face this situation head on and now David had inserted himself into her life again. He was like a ghost that we couldn’t get rid of.
Ella deserved to move on with her life, but it seemed to me that as long as David Lake was alive, she would never truly be free of him.
I was certain that I could do something about that.
The elevator finally reached the basement and I stepped out as soon as the doors opened. I kept my grip on Ella’s hand, leading her quickly to the car.
Ella and I climbed into my fastest car, and I tore out of the parking garage. She leaned back in her seat, her face pale, obviously uneasy with the way I was driving. But she didn’t protest.
She understood.
She knew why I was swerving through traffic, pushing the car far beyond the speed limit.
It wasn’t long before we’d cleared the chaos of the city, and the open road stretched out before us. I pressed harder on the accelerator, the speedometer climbing past 100 mph Still, Ella said nothing.
If David killed McIntyre, we’d lose a crucial asset in bringing him down. I couldn’t let that happen. I wouldn’t let that happen.
LAPAR
I glanced at Ella, my jaw tightening as an all–too–familiar wave of sickness churned in my gut. The memory of her pinned beneath David flashed in my mind–the terror in her eyes, the tears streaming down her face as she fought the drug’s effects…
The rage that consumed me was unlike anything I’d ever felt.
I had enemies, plenty of them. I wasn’t new to danger or hate. But no one had ever fueled my loathing the way David Lake did.
I was
I
reaching a breaking point. I wouldn’t allow this game of his to continue. Not anymore.
Ella POV
I didn’t know how to react to what was happening. I felt numb from the shock and anxiety of it.
Alexander’s driving was clear proof of his past as a race car driver. Though it made me uneasy, I couldn’t say I was afraid. I leaned back heavily into my seat, watching the world blur past us.
We were racing against time. We had no idea where David was or if we could beat him there.
Or if Dr. McIntyre would even be waiting for us when we arrived. For all we knew, this could be an elaborate trap.
Confirm the location,” Alexander said suddenly, his sharp angry voice breaking the tense silence.
I jumped, startled by his tone.

I glanced at him and saw his phone pressed to his car. Despite driving at a breakneck speed, he handled the wheel with effortless precision, making it look as natural as breathing.
“And David?” he demanded, his voice clipped.
“Who are you talking to?” I asked quietly.
“I want that location secured,” he snapped, his jaw tightening as anger flickered across his face. “No excuses! Secure it and move our men into position.”
My heart pounded at his words. “Alexander?” I asked, my confusion growing.
Why was he speaking like a military commander issuing battlefield orders?
He was an alpha–1 knew he had fighters under his command–but this felt different. The hard edge in his voice was something I’d never heard before.
He seemed so cold, so distant, that it made me shiver.
“If the asset is compromised, I’m holding you personally responsible,” he growled, his teeth clenched. “Do you understand?”
A second later, he ended the call, his fingers deftly swiping across his phone to dial another number. His eyes remained locked on the road, unwavering.
“August,” he said tersely. “Update.”
I stared at him, trying to make sense of what I was seeing. His anger was justified–I understood that much. I even appreciated how quickly he was taking action. The resources he had at his disposal were impressive and, right now, necessary.
But this didn’t feel right.
Alexander’s entire demeanor had shifted. He wasn’t the man I knew–not the warm, protective partner I trusted. His expression was so cold, so hard, it reminded me of a winter storm.
Silent. Deadly. Unforgiving.
It felt like that storm had taken over him, and the power it carried was chilling.
“What’s going on?” I asked again, my voice trembling slightly.
“Fix it,” he barked into the phone before abruptly ending the call.
“Alexander?”
He turned to me then, and in an instant, the ice in his eyes melted. He reached for my hand, his touch warm and gentle.
“Sorry,” he said, his tone softening. He offered me a small reassuring smile. “I can slow down if you’re scared.” I shook my head. “No, that’s not the problem.”
Confusion crossed his face before he looked back at the road. “What do you mean? What is the problem then?” “I don’t know,” I said weakly. “Who did you call? What was all that stuff you were saying?”
“I was checking on things,” he said simply. “Our people lost sight of David. I think we’ll still make it in time, though. If you want me to slow down I will. I don’t want to scare you.

I almost laughed at his words. His driving wasn’t scaring me, his behavior was.
Alexander and his secrets, I thought. It was pointless to ask anymore. It was clear that he was pretending not to know what I meant and now wasn’t the time for us to argue
Alexander was focused on helping me through this crisis, and I needed his help. Without him, there was no way that I could do anything about this. David would just swoop in and ruin everything again.
as it really so bad that Alexander didn’t want to tell me all about his contacts and his methods, I wondered. After
I hadn’t told him the truth about where my Information came from.
Maybe Alexander used to be military or something? If had served in the kings army, it would be public knowledge unless he was in some kind of a secret operation.
That made as much sense as any other explanation I could think of.
I looked back at the road and the world that zipped by us too fast to see.
Alexander and I both had so many secrets. Neither of us was able to fully trust anyone, it seemed. I couldn’t help but smile at the thought.
It seemed to me that we were a great match. Maybe we really deserved each other.
Things could be worse, I told myself. At least I knew that Alexander cared for me. He was proving that right now by going to such lengths to help make sure that David would be held accountable for all of his crimes.
I looked at Alexander, and my heart fluttered softly.
We were a perfect match.
