Elizabeth took a sip of her drink.
The waiter had cleared our plates when we finished our food. Now, we were just sharing a few drinks as we talked. I was surprised by how invested Elizabeth seemed in my wellbeing.
I hadn’t expected to make a new friend so quickly, and I was relieved to have someone to talk to. Everything with David was so much more difficult than I thought it would be.

“Well, that is sad to think about,” Elizabeth said softly. “I hadn’t considered it from that point of view.”
“People are posting about their support of me? And David is responding to these posts and comments?” I asked. This has happened recently?”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Show me,” I said, pointing towards her phone. “I want to see what he’s saying ”
Elizabeth unlocked her phone and opened one of her apps. “If you’re sure,” she said, “though it might be upsetting. He’s not exactly being nice.”
I took the phone from her and didn’t have to scroll far before I saw a post from David that was made less than an hour ago.
“Your gossip and slander mean nothing to me. Ella and I are meant to be together. Anyone who thinks they can win her away from me is a fool.”
“Win me away from him?” I said in confusion as I handed Elizabeth’s phone back to her. “What’s he talking about?”
Elizabeth glanced down at the post, then shrugged. “People have been defending you, including some other single men. I don’t think it’s anything especially passionate certainly nothing that should make David so obviously jealous. People are simply saying that you deserve better.”
“It’s strange,” I said.
“I don’t think it’s very strange,” Elizabeth said. “After all, he’s made a spectacle of himself recently. When people decide that they want public attention, they must also be prepared for that attention to be negative. It’s inevitable that people will find something to criticize. David should know better.”
“You sound like you speak from experience,” I said.

many things to say about me, and a lot of the time, it’s not very nice. Of course, most never be so bold as to
say it to my face, but I hear them nonetheless.”
“That must be so stressful,” I said sympathetically.
I had heard plenty of rumors about Elizabeth. Most of them had to do with her desire to take over as alpha of her pack, a position that her father’s beta currently filled.
“That’s what drew me to you in the first place,” Elizabeth said. “You handled the harsh rumors about your woll so well. I knew that you must be a strong woman, just like me, and I thought that we would get along.”
“I think you were right,” I said with a smile. “It seems to me we get along wonderfully.”
“I don’t have a lot of friends,” Elizabeth admitted. “It’s difficult to become close to people when it seems that everyone is constantly watching me and waiting for me to make a mistake.”
“I would never judge you for a mistake,” I said. “After all, regardless of your status, you are still a person. You deserve to be treated with respect and kindness.”
“I wish more people believed like you do,” she said.
“I’m curious about one thing.”
“What’s that?” Elizabeth asked. “You can ask me anything
“Well, why are you following the rumors about me online if you know that rumors and gossip can be so hurtful?”
“It’s important to know what public opinion is on certain matters,” Elizabeth said. “It helps to understand how to handle people and what issues might arise in the future.”
“I see,” I said.
She smirked slightly and took another sip of her drink. “Besides, I find it amusing. People have started to speculate about who might be romantically interested in you now that you’ve rejected David.”
My eyes went wide with surprise at this. “Are people really talking about that?” I asked.
“Oh yes,” Elizabeth said, unlocking her phone and scrolling “There are even lists.”
“That’s ridiculous,” I said dismissively. “Why would people waste their time making lists of who they think might be interested in me?”
Elizabeth shrugged. “I don’t know why people do it; I just know that they have. Would you like to hear some of the names?” she asked with a mischievous grin.
“..” My words trailed off as I thought about it.
I was strangely curious about what people might be saying I hadn’t considered that an actual relationship might follow my breakup with David. After all, I’d already planned to follow through with my fake relationship with Alexander.
I couldn’t deny that I was curious about who else might genuinely like me.
“I’ll take your hesitation as a yes,” Elizabeth said. “Here are the top three names I keep seeing: Damian Rose, the oldest son of the Briar Rose Alpha; Jonathan Oak of the Red Oak Pack; and Alexander Black.”
“Alexander?!” I said in shock.
I put my hand over my mouth after my outburst. I hadn’t meant to be so loud, but I was genuinely shocked that people would speculate about Alexander being interested in me.

Elizabeth smiled. “It seems that his wedding gift to you has gotten quite a bit of attention. I think people were asking him if he intended to take the gift back after the wedding was called off, and he said that he wished for you. to keep it and that you deserved to have fine things. People have read a lot into that statement.”
“I hadn’t heard anything about that,” I said. “That’s so kind of him.”
“He’s been very kind to you, it seems,” Elizabeth said with a smile. “And he isn’t generally a very warm person, so people have begun to talk.”
“That’s going to make David so angry,” I muttered. “He hates Alexander.”
“Well, if David didn’t want another man to pursue you, he should have treated you better,” Elizabeth said dismissively. “And I agree with Alexander–you do deserve fine things.
“Thank you,” I said softly.
I knew that Alexander was speaking highly of me to set the stage for our eventual relationship, but I still found his words touching–and Elizabeth’s as well.
It warmed me to know that I had people, besides my parents, who genuinely cared for me. It gave me hope that everything I was going through with David and Amanda would be worth it in the end.
It made me believe that I may be able to have a happy future, even without David.
