Her fragrance lingered in the air, and the warmth of their brief contact made Lucas‘ heart race.
“What are you doing? Stay away from me!” Celine snapped, quickly pulling back with a deep frown.
“Come on, sweetheart, we’re about to see your parents. Shouldn’t we at least pretend to be close?” Lucas teased, extending his arm toward her.
“That won’t be necessary,” Celine replied icily. “My family already knows this marriage is just for show. The entire upper class of Demonia will be well aware that you’re nothing more than a placeholder husband after the wedding. So there’s no need for you to put on an act.”
With that, she turned on her heel and strode toward the house alone.
Lucas rubbed his nose and narrowed his eyes. “A placeholder husband, huh?”
If any of his enemies were to witness the look in Shadow Demon’s eyes at that moment, they would undoubtedly be terrified–because for the first time in a long while, Shadow Demon looked genuinely
angry.
Meanwhile, Heidi had already arrived in the living room before Celine and Lucas.
Since tonight was a family banquet, she had dressed to impress. Wrapped in an elegant white dress, she exuded both grace and sophistication–true to the reputation of the Xavier women, whose beauty was unrivaled.
But Heidi wasn’t alone. Beside her, there was a strikingly handsome foreign man with an upright demeanor.
“I brought Bill here tonight to completely outshine that useless Lucas,” Heidi whispered with a smirk. “Once Celine sees the contrast, she’ll finally realize how pathetic her so–called fiancé is. Honestly, we all thought that scumbag had disappeared for good last time. Who would have guessed…‘
As she spoke, her voice dripped with disdain, her teeth gritted in frustration.
Willy, observing his niece’s reaction, raised an eyebrow. “You seem to despise him.”
”
Rosalie, who had been listening quietly, glanced at Heidi. It was clear that every time Lucas‘ name was mentioned, a flicker of resentment crossed Heidi’s usually composed and refined expression.
It was odd.
Rosalie found Lucas insufferable, but her attitude toward him was more of detached contempt rather than outright hatred. Heidi, however, seemed to have taken things personally.
“Of course I hate him!” Heidi huffed. “That scum somehow tricked Celine into agreeing to this sham of a marriage. Isn’t that enough reason to despise him? Don’t you feel the same?”
“You’re right.” Rosalie nodded in agreement.
Wanting to shift the topic, she turned to the man beside Heidi and whispered, “Heidi, is this your boyfriend?”
Heidi chuckled. “Not exactly. More like a classmate of sorts. He’s also pursuing his PhD at Demonia University. I brought him here tonight to act as my boyfriend. More importantly, to make Lucas look like

a complete fool in comparison. That way, Celine will see the gap between them and reject him herself.
“Bill comes from the prestigious Carters in Fleurvain. They’ve been nobility since ancient times, and their current head still holds the title of Duke.”
Rosalie nodded approvingly. “A smart move. As they say, comparison brings clarity. Without someone exceptional to contrast with, Celine might not realize how unworthy Lucas is. But with Bill here, she won’t be able to ignore the difference. Even if it’s just a marriage of convenience, not just anyone is qualified to join our family.”
Heidi smirked at her aunt’s agreement.
Willy, however, remained silent.
After handling the aftermath of last night’s assassination attempt, he had uncovered some rather intriguing information. One thing was certain–the man his daughter had chosen was far from ordinary.
Still, he would wait to meet Lucas in person before making any conclusions.
Heidi said to Bill seriously, “When Celine brings that guy in, you must carry yourself well and put him to shame. Got it?”
Bill nodded confidently and responded in fluent Daralianese, “Don’t worry, Heidi. I’ll make sure he feels completely embarrassed.”
Raised in an influential family, he had been trained since childhood to exude grace and authority in every word and action.
Although Heidi had only asked him to pretend to be her boyfriend, there was a subtle admiration in his eyes when he looked at her.
After all, both she and Celine were undeniably beautiful, the kind of women who naturally attracted plenty of admirers.
At that moment, Rosalie whispered, “They’re coming.”
Seconds later, Celine entered the room, with Lucas following behind her, his usual relaxed attitude unchanged.
