The moment Willy laid eyes on his so–called future son–in–law, he frowned. His first impression wasn’t exactly positive.
The disheveled suit Lucas was wearing only made things worse. Willy couldn’t help but feel that Lucas wasn’t taking him seriously at all.
Even if Lucas was somewhat capable, he hardly seemed like someone worthy of being Celine’s husband.
Across the room, Heidi, the stunning beauty, remained poised and elegant, but a flicker of resentment flashed in her eyes before she quickly masked it.
Rosalie glanced at Willy and remarked indifferently, “Well, there’s the ‘wonderful‘ son–in–law your daughter chose for you.”
Willy looked at Lucas meaningfully.
“You must be Lucas?”
Lucas flashed a grin. Dad. Lucas–handsome and heroic.”
That’s me,
If dinner had already been served, the absurdity of his introduction might have made everyone lose their appetite.
Handsome and heroic? What kind of nonsense was that?
Rosalie shot her husband a sideways glance, silently reinforcing her opinion that Lucas was nothing but a Scoundrel.
Willy forced an awkward smile. “You certainly have a sense of humor.”
“Of course! People praise me about that all the time,” Lucas replied shamelessly.
Celine, looking as if she had reached her limit, shot him a sharp glare. “Shut up! No one’s going to mistake you for a mute if you stay quiet.”
Although Lucas was her choice, she couldn’t help but feel embarrassed.
Trying to shift the conversation, she turned her gaze to the man standing beside Heidi and asked with a hint of curiosity, “Heidi, who’s this?”
Heidi smiled, her tone laced with pride. “This is my boyfriend, Bill. He’s from the Carters of Fleurvain, a noble lineage that has endured for centuries.” As she spoke, she cast a meaningful glance at Lucas.
The message was clear–Celine was supposed to compare the men they had chosen for themselves. Rosalie chimed in, “Celly, isn’t it quite the coincidence? Both you and Heidi brought your partners today. This should be a joyous occasion. But, putting the two side by side … Well, the contrast is rather striking.”
Though their words were subtle, both Heidi and Rosalie were deliberately undermining Lucas. They believed their approach would work.
Heidi and Celine were cousins, but one had managed to secure a nobleman, while the other ended up with a street–level thug. The stark difference was bound to make Celine feel uncomfortable.

It was a simple fact–if Celine didn’t witness others doing better than her, she wouldn’t be too bothered. But when everyone around her seemed superior in every way, it would be impossible not to feel the sting of comparison.
Celine felt a subtle emptiness in her heart when she laid eyes on Heidi’s boyfriend. At the same time, her disdain for Lucas deepened, leaving her at a loss for words.
Still, she chose to keep her thoughts to herself.
After exchanging pleasantries with Willy, Lucas stood to the side, grinning as he observed Heidi and Rosalie.
It was clear that the two women were determined to push him away from the woman he adored, even going as far as bringing in a foreign man to belittle him.
When Heidi noticed the relaxed smile on Lucas‘ face, an unexplainable irritation welled up inside her. A sneer formed on her lips as she fixed him with a sharp gaze.
“Having no status or talent is one thing, but you don’t even have basic etiquette. You’re completely useless! This is a family banquet, yet you show up looking like this? Where did you even find that outfit–out of a trash bin?”
Lucas frowned at her
ocking words. “Are you talking about me, Heidi?”
“Hah! At least you have enough sense to realize it!” she retorted with contempt. “And don’t call me by my first name–you don’t deserve to!”
Lucas squinted slightly and replied in a calm yet firm tone, “Who says I’m not dressed appropriately? In this suit, I could walk straight into a state banquet, let alone a family banquet. This is my way of showing respect to my future in–laws.”
Pausing for a moment, he cleared his throat before adding, “It’s just a little wrinkled. I was in such a hurry to see you all that I didn’t have time to iron it.”
As soon as he finished speaking, an awkward silence settled over the room. Everyone stared at him, utterly speechless.
Did he seriously just claim that his outfit was suitable for a state banquet? The thought alone was laughable.
Even Willy shook his head in silent disbelief.
Rosalie snorted and sneered at her daughter. “Celly, what were you thinking about? Do you want to embarrass me to death by choosing a man like this?”
