LESLIE’S POV

I watch every single detall, every single twitch of both their faces as they try to make sense of my words that I intentionally kept vague. The entire five minutes of engaging with them both has left me with a series of feelings ranging from fulfillment at their reaction to seeing me, to anger at the way Beverly’s shameless and hypocrital attitude.
Not to mention how I was swayed for a split second when I saw that Kian actually came here with Beverly. Yes, I expected it. That’s the whole point of making a plus one an important requirement for attending the gala but I didn’t realize until I saw Beverly appear with her dinner dress subtly outlining her growing belly.
Didn’t realize how deep down, I hoped Kian wouldn’t even show up at all especially after Travis updated me on everything Kian was up to in the past month. My father’s influence was what made it easy to manipulate the news and even get the police on our side so I can fake my death for an entire month. Travis told me about how Kian visited every police branch in the city and sometimes caused quite a scene. It was like that was Travis’s way of trying to tell me I could br wrong about Kian being the one who ordered my death but I ruled it off knowing Kian doesn’t care about me enough to do that.
I made myself believe he only did all that to try to confirm that I was truly dead and out of his life. And I was right.
One month after my fake death and he seems to have moved on just fine. I can’t help but look at him with so much resentment and I continue to relish the expression of disbelief that is still evident on his face knowing that this is only just the beginning.
Beverly on the other hand is just so insufferable, making every damn thing about her but it’s fun to watch her act important when she is just a pawn in a game.
“Did you hit your head or something?” She asks.
“Why? Is it so hard to believe that an event like this can be held in my name?” I shoot back.
Beverly chuckles lowly, “The last time I checked, Leslie, you were an ordinary secretary who managed to get her boss in bed with wicked tricks, leeched off him for three years and still couldn’t keep him from running into his ex–girlfriend’s arms within a month of her arrival. So tell me, what exactly is this name you speak off? Cause the only other name that get you a pass into a place like this is Kian’s last name.”
Beverly’s self absorbed statement has me reeling yet I am not surprised since she has always looked down on me.
To Beverly, I am no one. And she is right, I am no one. Even if I end up getting introduced as my father’s heiress right now and take his name, it doesn’t change a thing because the only right I have to my father’s wealth is the one I got through birth, not my hardwork and contribution.
That changes today.
Beverly casts a suspicious look at Travis who is still standing defensively beside me and her lips curl up in a sly smile.

sleeping with Kian’s uncle. You two were gone for a month and you faked your death,” She says and lets out a dramatic gasp, “Did you two get married in secrel? My God, I can’t believe you.”
It’s amusing not only watching Beverly make things up but also how Klan’s eyes seem to darken like he actually believes the rubbish his mistress just spewed. I jam my hands together at her perfomance.
“Wow, you figured that out real quick.” I tease and Kian steps forward. Travis also steps inbetween us just as quick. With this kind of scene, we attract a handful of guests who are whispering among themselves. I have always shied away from attention like this but it feels empowering today.
“Is it true?” Kian asks and I just want to punch him in the face for how dumb he is. Just how much does he love Beverly to be manipulated by her unfound lles this way? Just how mad is he to discover that I am not dead? T
“Step back, Kian.” Travis warns but Kian doesn’t even budge as he stands up to his uncle.
“I asked a fucking question.” His voice is raised and he looks like he is about to start a fight. Somehow, we become a spectacle for more than just a few guests as every single person in the hall is now looking
our way
“Where the hell were you with my wife?” He glares right at me now, “Did you two deceive me just so your could get away with sleeping with-”
Travis shoves him before he can complete his words, Watch your mouth!”
Seeing how things are starting to get out of hand, I try to stop Travis but Kian shoves his uncle back. “Kian, stop!” I say but he doesn’t listen and attempts to shove Travis again.
Just when I thought it’s going to be a messy fight this evening, a fight that wasn’t part of the plan, my “father arrives, rolling towards us in his wheelchair as he says, “What is going on here? How dare you cause a commotion at my gala?”
Beverly runs to him quickly before I can even react.
“Chairman Hanson, thank God you are here.” She says in a dramatic voice and points at me, “It’s her. It’s that bitch’s fault.”
My father looks at me, eyes softening but turning as hard as stone when he turns back to Beverly.
“Choose your words wisely young lady or you will be kicked out of here.” He warns and Beverly is stunned into silence for only a few seconds.
“Why should I be the one to get kicked out?” She started it.
“She is the new head designer of my fashion company, show some respect.”
At my father’s announcement, everyone gasps.
