I cover the distance between the cars in two strides, cornering her and shutting back the door with a loud bang that echoes throughout the empty lot and Leslie’s eyes go wide.
“Did you not hear me? I said grandfather is back.”
Leslie’s eyes hold no other emotion at those words other than the anger that has been in them since she
saw me.
“I heard you loud and clear, Kian. I just don’t see how that concerns me when he is your family, not mine.”
“This isn’t about being my family. You know how much that old man adores you.” I say to her again, hoping that sticks to her.
“We’re divorced now, it doesn’t matter what I was to him.” She replies stubbornly and I cuss too low for her to catch the words.
“I didn’t tell him about the divorce, Leslie, In fact, he cannot know until he returns to London in two weeks. He is ill and you know that more than anyone else. You just need to keep up appearances with me for two weeks and then I can let him know later when he is healthy enough,”
At my words, Leslie laughs.
“Of course, you couldn’t have waited for five hours unless you stood to gain something. You’re so despicable, Kian. Tell me, do you even care about your grandfather’s health at all or is this just about him seeing you as a disappointment and unfit as the head of the company he built with his blood and sweat?” Her words make me spiral. It’s my turn to feel anger now as I grip the car door’s handle tight but she doesn’t even cower at my angry gaze. Instead, she speaks again.
“You know what? I don’t even care why you are really here. I will not pretend everything is okay and deceive that poor man. He is your family, sort it out yourself.”
She tries to wrench the car door open but I refuse to let go, even more enraged now by her rejection. “He is the reason we got married in the first place, don’t you think you atleast owe him for innocently helping to align your plans to marry me after getting me drunk and luring me into bed with you?”
Big mistake. I realize how big of a mistake I made by saying that to her but the words were already out of my lips before I could salvage them. I close my eyes, sighing at how hurt flashes in her own eyes. There goes my chance of ever convincing her.
“Leslie…I didn’t mean-” I start to say but she cuts me off.
“No, you have run that narrative for three years now and I have learnt to accept that is all I’ll ever be to you. A woman who wormed her way into your life like a pest. And you know what? I regret that night as much as you do! I regret ever wasting seven years of my life catering to your needs and neglecting mine. she heaves as she speaks, “I do not care what you think of me anymore but you can’t just come in here and make demands like this.”
Then she looks me dead in the eyes as she dishes out her next words.
“The next time I see you anywhere around me, I will get a restraining order against you from the court.” It’s not an empty threat, I see in her eyes. It makes my hand fall away from the car door, makes me step

Leslie gives me one last look of disdain before getting into the car, I stand in the same spot and watch the car drive off, catching what I fear will be my last glimpse of her.
And as if I haven’t already been dealt enough blows today already, I get two text messages. One is from Peter, an apology for not being able to keep my father at the office anymore.
The other is from Beverly and I don’t need to read it to know that my grandfather is now at my home.
