Chapter 48
Olivia’s cutting words immediately silenced the room.
My face devoid of any emotion, returned to my scat, clutching
se
my phone tightly.
A cold sneer danced across Olivia’s features as she glanced at me before exiting the room.
Once she was gone, the hushed whispers resumed amongst the others.
“She really knows how to bluff!”
“Indeed, ever since Emily left, some people seem to have developed an inflated sense of their own importance in the department!”
“I wonder when Director Hopkins will be back. We better watch our words until he returns. You
never know who might be listening!”
I remained stoic, mindlessly doodled on the design draft with my pen.
I was well aware that no matter who you were, someone somewhere would talk behind your back.
However, they spoke of Director Hopkins, whom I was curious to meet. It was said that he was the Head of Design and a highly capable individual. Alas, he had gone on a business trip these past few
days!
Third POV
On the top floor, in Mr Strakovski’s office, Lukas‘ phone buzzed, displaying the name “Emily Scholl” on the screen. He hesitated momentarily before answering the call.
“What do you mean by all this, Lukas?” Emily began to reprimand as soon as she spoke.
Lukas‘ impatience flicked in his eyes. “What’s the matter?”
“You’ve never defended me like this before.” Emily’s tone grew teary as she replied. “Are you really
interested in her?”
Learning about the situation in the United States from Olivia’s call had sent her into a whirlwind of
emotions. She hadn’t anticipated such drastic changes in just a few days since she left.
The internet media wasn’t as advanced back then,” frowning, Lukas responded.

“But can she even compare to me? I was your girlfriend for six years, while she’s just a woman with
marriage certificate!” Defiantly. Emily raised her voice.
Lukas‘ expression turned cold. “At least she has that marriage certificate. Unlike you!”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears as she cried out to Lukas, “I loved you so much. How could you treat me
like this?”
“You were the one who wanted us to get married, but you were also the one who stood me up and the one who wanted to leave. Nobody forced you to do that, Emily.” Lukas maintained a severe expression.
“I did it because I felt like you didn’t love me! I wanted to show you that you cared, but it seemed
ke you didn’t! Don’t you feel it?” Emily was crying.
Lukas’s voice was cold, “So, you think by standing me up time after time, you can prove whether I love you or not? Your behavior is quite childish.”
Panicking. Emily sensed that she was losing Lukas, slipping further away from him.
She desperately wanted to regain control of the situation. The pursuit of her career and proving Lukas‘ love suddenly seemed inconsequential
All she wanted was to be by his side again. “Listen. I’m coming back to the United States now. Can you please get a divorce from that woman? No one in our families knows about your marriage. If you do this, we can act like none of this ever happened. Is that okay?”
“That’s just wishful thinking on your part,” he stated firmly.
It was true that only Emily and the Lopez family were aware of his marriage to Sophia. Each time Emily stood him up, she had someone secretly monitor him outside the Civil Affairs Bureau, and Lukas was well aware of it.
The rest of his family and the Scholl family believed Emily had gone abroad. They were oblivion.to his marriage to someone else.
Emily felt herself on the brink of a breakdown, and she hysterically questioned, “Lukas, have you truly fallen for that woman?”
His expression darkened, and Lukas abruptly hung up the phone.
However, his phone rang again before he could even process what had just transpired.
Freling exasperated, Lukas answered, not bothering to check the caller ID. “Are you done yet?”

The person on the phone paused briefly before playfully asking, “What’s got you all worked up? You seem really irritable!”
Lukas glanced at his phone’s screen and immediately recognized the Incoming call as Elias
Schmidt’s.
Lukas and Elias were good budding
The two had formed a tight knit hond while studying abroad together, and their friendship had only grown stronger upon returning to the United States.
Rubbing his forehead, Lukas replied in a muffled voice, “Nothing’s wrong!”
Respecting his friend’s privacy, Elias didn’t push further, suggesting instead, “We haven’t seen each other for several days. How about meeting at our usual place tonight for a drink
What do you
Arink?”
Lukas considered the offer and eventually agreed, “See you tonight!”
Hung up the phone, Lukas stared at the computer screen. His face darkened as he found himself fixated on Emily’s desperate question about whether he had fallen for that woman.
What does it mean to like someone truly? Lukas never allowed others to figure out his preferences easily.
In the past, he had been a smoker, but he eventually managed to quit the habit..
He knew that when it came to his fondness for something, he had the strength to let it go.
As a result, there was nothing in the world that he couldn’t abandon.
Although he had married Sophia, it was more a result of going with the flow, nothing more.
Lost in his thoughts, Martins knocked on the door and entered, informing Lukas, “Mr Strakovski, Miss Elena Schmidt is here. She’s accompanied by Gerald and says she’s here to apologize.”
