59: It’s Your House
AIDAN
I was unapologetic about letting the rest of the world burn when it came to Tara and our kid, so one didn’t really need to think too much to guess the kinds of things I would be willing to do when it was them involved.
When Tara asked me to help her with Nadia, there was really only one answer, but I couldn’t help the many emotions running through my mind.
It was my fault. All of it was my fault.
Tara and Nadia had lived in this pack for over eight years, and I‘ d only been here for weeks, but look how much damage my présence had caused in their lives.
They lost their home, Nadia went missing looking for me, and Tara almost lost her life.
Goddess.
I could feel her limp in my arms, and it felt like I was dying inside.
Standing by the entrance door and watching Nadia sleep peacefully on her bed after Tara showed me how to get her, ready, I knew that I had to do something differently or risk something much worse happening later.
And that started with getting to the root of this goddamn.

“Hey,” Tara’s voice cut through my thoughts, and I quietly turned around to find her staring at me. From what it looked like, she had been there for quite some time without me noticing.
My eyes instinctively came down to her bandaged arm, inspecting it to see if anything was out of place.
“It hurts a little, but it’ll heal,” she said, answering my internal question.
My eyes slowly came back to her face, tracing her curves from the outline of the dress she had on. She had changed into something else, and her hair was flowing down her face.
She looked so beautiful.
Pushing myself off the door, I took a few steps in her direction, remembering all the ways that we were so right for each other years ago until I messed everything up in such an unforgiving
way.
“You should go to sleep,” I started. “I’ll have to meet up with. Jace and some of the pack security to discuss, but I still have to leave for Attica pack.”
As much as I would have loved to stay behind, more so now that Nadia had told me that she didn’t want me to leave, there was just so much work piled up back in my pack.
Personal projects too that I couldn’t afford to delay any longer.
I had assured Nadia that I would be back because my real life. was wherever the both of them were, but I preferred to do more

than say, which meant I had to leave quickly so that I could come back quickly.
Tara spoke. “It’s late, Aidan.”
I nodded. It was way past midnight already.
“I know. But I drove, and the StoneWolves aren’t in the streets anymore,” I explained like she didn’t already know that.
“Yes, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s so late and there was still a storm earlier. I can’t let you go outside by this time.”
It was both comical and warming to see Tara stepping up as the protector now.
Still, I shook my head.
“I wouldn’t want to inconvenience either of you.”
She smiled, lighting up her facial features, and drawing me in.
“Don’t forget that this is your house, Aidan. There are many spare rooms, so make yourself comfortable and leave in the morning.”
Even if it wasn’t in the same bed, sleeping under the same roof as Tara and our kid was a lottery was willing to cash in tonight, so it didn’t take much convincing for me to agree.
In the next few minutes, Tara made sure I was comfortable in one of the rooms just a little distance away from theirs, but she was still there, standing by the door.
I was on the other side of it, struggling with everything within me to keep my hands from reaching out and pulling her into a

She looked amazing and smelled amazing, and I wanted her.
The evidence must have been written on my face because Tara took a small step back with a gasp, and I knew that this wasn’t the time to dive headfirst into something that she would later consider a mistake.
I said she, because I could never consider anything relating to Tara as a mistake.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” I said, saying my goodnight, and she nodded.
“Goodnight, Aidan.”
Closing the door and standing still, I heard Tara retreat to her room and close her door behind her.
I spent more time than necessary standing in one spot because when I focused for a few seconds, I could hear Nadia’s even breathing as she slept.
I could hear Tara getting into bed, and to me, this was a big win.
Since I didn’t have a change of clothes and Tara’s closet wasn’t exactly my size, I did a quick clean–up and threw myself on the bed with the shorts I had on from earlier.
This was the first night, in a really long time that I slept
peacefully, knowing that everything I had ever needed was right under the roof with me.
Even though I only had a few hours of sleep, I woke up better than I would have done if I slept back in the uncomfortable

hotel suite.
I woke up before anyone else, and when I checked my phone, Jace had left me a couple of voicemails.
Not wanting to wake either of them when I was just leaving in a few minutes, I quietly made my way outside before slipping into the car.
After a quick drive to the hotel to put some warm clothes on, I headed over to the pack house to meet with Jace, a lady I recognized as Tara’s friend, Jenna, who happened to be among the pack’s security; and a few other guys.
We went right down to the matter, discussing how the heck StoneWolves got themselves into Vermont pack, and what exactly they wanted, because by my guess, this was just their first attempt, and there would be more.
All through the meeting, something kept turning in my head like. connecting a puzzle about all this, but I refused to accept it.
